WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. senators from the electoral battleground states of West Virginia and Arkansas slammed the Republican National Committee (news - web sites) on Thursday for a pamphlet that suggested liberals would ban the Bible.

"Two weeks ago, the Republican National Committee sent a mass mailing to West Virginians suggesting that liberals -- in other words, everyone but Republicans -- are out to ban the Bible," Sen. Robert Byrd (news, bio, voting record), a West Virginia Democrat, said on the Senate floor.

"What a ridiculous claim! It is a flat-out, no-doubt-about-it, silly, sophomoric charge," Byrd said. "The Republican National Committee is spreading this tripe to smear Democrats, and the president ought to demand that the Republican National Committee apologize to the people of West Virginia."

Sen. Blanche Lincoln (news, bio, voting record), a Democrat from Arkansas, said the same mailing was sent to Arkansans.

"I hope that there will be an apology for their claims that Democrats want to ban the Bible and the inference that Democrats for some reason cannot have a faith as close or as deeply held as the other party," Lincoln said on the Senate floor. "I find that to be the pit, the absolute bottom of what is wrong in the political process."

A spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee confirmed the mailing was sent to Arkansas and West Virginia, stressing it addressed the issue of "activist judges."

"When the Massachusetts Supreme Court sanctioned same sex marriage and people in other states realized they could be compelled to recognize those laws, same sex marriage became an issue. Activist judges also want to remove the words 'under God' from the pledge of allegiance," spokeswoman Christine Iverson said in an e-mail.

The e-mail noted the mailing did not mention the word "Democrats."

Without providing details about the pamphlet, the e-mail did not dispute press reports indicating the pamphlet included a graphic showing a Bible with the word "banned" across it, and a graphic of a man placing a ring on the hand of another man with the word "allowed" across it.

And that scary thing is that someone might actually believe the pamphlet.

I never got that mailing.

Why is it these horrid handouts and mailings never reach my doorstep?

And this supposed mailing doesn't even have the word Democrats in it but it is an attack on Democrats?

Do you guys really peruse for this stuff or is it an automatic mailing if you subscribe to unnaturalrightwinghatred.com?

Targeted mailings to Arkansas and West Virginia. Do you live in eithe state? I thought you were in Missouri?

It's a stupid scare tactic... and a pretty low one at that...

All elections have them... Remember Willie Horton ads by the Repubs? Remember the pickup truck dragging a black man ads by the Dems? These kind of things are low, really low...

I figured you would condemn it as a stupid action on its own, independent of the party that put it out there...

Am I wrong?

Yes, you are wrong. I am tired of the Willie Horton excuse. It has been debunked on this forum SEVERAL TIMES.
Making a point about the use of racial symbols to scare the American public, he shows the Bush/Quayle ad called "Revolving Doors," which attacked Michael Dukakis for a Massachusetts prison furlough program by showing prisoners entering and exiting a prison (the original ad can be seen here [Real Player video]). Superimposed over the footage of the prisoners is the text "Willie Horton released. Then kills again." This caption is displayed as if it is part of the original ad. However, existing footage, media reports and the recollections of several high-level people involved in the campaign indicate that the "Revolving Doors" ad did not explicitly mention Horton, unlike the notorious ad run by the National Security Political Action Committee (which had close ties to Bush media advisor Roger Ailes). In addition, the caption is incorrect -- Horton did not kill anyone while on prison furlough (he raped a woman).

I know it is nice to think the Evil Republican Empire will stop at nothing to destroy the kind gentle liberal Democrats, but outright lies do nothing to support that position.

Show me the ad and then I will tell you.

Obviously, your boys are guilty of the same crime you are with Willie Horton. The ad is defined as not even mentioning the Demcrat party, yet your boys (like you and Michael Moore) deliberately assume the party is in question. I can't make that leap of logic without seeing the document.

Forward it to me, and I can make an informed decision without liberal liars sticking my nose in their assumed "facts".

He didn't see it so it doesn't exist.

Typical Russ diversion... Same deal when he was pressed directly on the question of whether or not he believed O'reilly believed what he said or not.

Russ is full of opinions until you press him on them. Then he has nothing of substance to say.

Also, I would like your take on the Willie Horton issue now that you have received more data. Obviously, it offended you that you believed GHB lied to obtain his position. How do you feel knowing now it was your own party and Michael Moore that actually lied regarding Willie Horton?

Third time you have mentioned O'Reilly tonight. Are you low on the validation department again?

I found this one in less than 10 seconds. You posted it only a half an hour ago.
What happened to that world class sense of humor that you and O'reilly are so famous for?

Your lack of a cohesive memory is probably a big part of the issue as to why you are incompetent in a great deal of your posts.

I will not allow you to use misdirection. I am asking about this article and the information as reported and published. If that isn't enough for you, then there's nothing I can do about it.

As far as Willie Horton you obviously didn't read my condemnation of the Dems ads about whites using a pickup truck to kill a black man in order to scare black voters... You were very selective.

I condemn them all.

The Willie Horton ad can be downloaded from this link: http://www.udel.edu/poscir/road/course/commercials/bush1988-willie-horton.ram

=================================================
And from the Washington Post:

"The Horton ad caused a huge media stir when it ran during the fall of the race involving Vice President George H.W. Bush and Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, the Democratic nominee. The ad, launched by a group called the National Security Political Action Committee, showed a mug shot of a black convict named William Horton (although he was never known as "Willie," the ad referred to him that way) who had attacked an Oxon Hill, Md., couple while free under a Massachusetts prison furlough program overseen by Dukakis. The ad was intended to highlight allegations that Dukakis was soft on crime, but critics saw it as an attempt to stir up racial fears. "

Again from the Post:

"In both the Horton and Swift boat cases, the respective Bush campaigns disclaimed responsibility, saying the ads were the work of unaffiliated groups. But in both instances, news media reports subsequently exposed ties between the official campaigns and the independent groups. In Horton's case, Bush's campaign manager, the late Lee Atwater, was at one point quoted as saying he intended to make Horton "a household name." But subsequent inquiry by the Federal Election Commission found no illegal coordination between the campaign and the independent group. "

If you will not "allow" misdirection, then why post on the topic. You are too inconsistent in your thoughts.

The ad was deliberately doctored by Michael Moore (he even admitted it) and has been used as a rallying cry for the Dems for 12 years now.

And again, do you have an original copy of the email? I have no problem calling a spade a spade, but I want to see the card before I do. The Dems have obviously already told lies regarding the subject as they state they are attacked even though they aren't even mentioned. I want to see the material myself. I would also like to know how many people received this mailing and how the data was gathered to send the material. I don't deny it was the Republicans who did so (as they admitted the mailing in the article), but I am curious as to how many actually received it.

Actually, that is a fantastic idea. Credit to you.

DNC and Robert Byrd's Emails:
Recently, Senator Robert Byrd complained about a mass mailing initiated by the RNC in West Virginia and Arkansas depicting a banned Bible and allowed homosexual marriages. Can you please send me a copy at your earliest convenience? Thank you for your assistance in this important matter.

RNC Email:
Recently an article was published regarding a mass mailing in the states of West Virginia and Arkansas on the topic of gay marriages and the possibility of banning the Bible. Christine Iverson who represents herself as a spokeswoman for the RNC verified the mailing.

Could you please send me a copy? Thank you for your time and assistance in this most important matter.

Keep in mind that it is the Dems who have introduced a bill to re-introduce the draft and that Kerry not only alluded to the idea that GWB would do so, but he also stated the Dems would never do so completely ignoring his brethens work in Congress

It's even worse than that though...Kerry says that Bush is going to do it when it takes an act of congress to actually start. There is legislation in congress to restart the draft but it was introduced by Charlie Rangel for racial inequality reasons. Kerry knows this, but it doesn't stop him from pretending that it might happen. Kerry knows this despite suggesting that all high school students be required to do service (something he has since taken off his website).
