Holmes Wins AFC Offensive Player of the Week Honor
Oct 05, 2004, 4:47:58 PM
The National Football League informed the Chiefs on Tuesday that RB Priest Holmes has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday. It is the fifth time in his career he has been chosen for the award and the fourth time he has been honored as a member of the Chiefs. Holmes received this honor twice in 2001 and once in 2002 as a member of the Chiefs, and now trails only QB Joe Montana (six) for most career AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors in Kansas City history.
Holmes (5-9, 213) carried the ball 33 times for 125 yards with two touchdowns, as the Chiefs pulled out their first win of the season with a 27-24 win at Baltimore. Holmes’ 33 attempts were the second-most of his career and his 125 ground yards marked his third 100-yard rushing performance of the season. That 100-yard rushing effort also snapped the Ravens streak of nine consecutive games without permitting a 100-yard back, which was the NFL’s longest active streak entering Monday’s contest. Holmes now leads the NFL with 476 yards rushing and ranks tied for first among non-kickers in scoring with 36 points.
Holmes gave the Chiefs a 17-10 lead midway through the second quarter when he bowled into the end zone from four yards out. The three-time Pro Bower then helped stretch the Kansas City lead to 27-17 with a one-yard scoring dive on the first play of the fourth quarter. Holmes also became only the fourth RB since the AFL-NFL merger in ‘70 to reach the 5,000-yard plateau with a team in 50 games or less.
Holmes also won the award in ‘98 when he exploded for 27 carries and 173 yards with two TDs in his first career start vs. Cincinnati (9/27) as a member of the Ravens. The University of Texas product joined Kansas City as an unrestricted free agent on April 21st of 2001 from Baltimore. Holmes originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Ravens in ‘97.
