Awesome, ain't it? Sometime Saturday I decided to tune in to CMSU's online feed to see how bad we were being slaughtered. To my surprise, we were only down by seven. So, I listened the rest of the game. My half-assed commentary is in my "Holy crap! UMR won a football game!" thread from the start of the season.

Oh, and "pound for pound", TMQ thinks Pitt State is the most unsportsmanlike team in college football.

Obscure College Rodomontade

Last week's column noted that Pittsburg of Kansas, TMQ's second-favorite obscure college, won consecutive games by margins of 91-27 and 70-14 -- but in each case continued to pass like mad in the fourth quarter, running up the score in decidedly unsportsmanlike fashion. Saturday, the Gorillas beat Emporia State 72-27, but set a new low for lack of sportsmanship. Getting the ball with a 65-27 lead and 7:45 remaining in the fourth quarter, Pitt State passed on four of five plays, frantically trying to run up the score. Worried about losing your 38-point late fourth-quarter lead, coach? Earlier in the year, Pitt State was still passing in the fourth quarter despite leading Truman State by 77-7. Maybe Pitt State boosters are dancing over all these 70-points-plus outings, but Pitt State students and team members should feel embarrassed about being part of a program that consistently exhibits such poor sportsmanship. And yea, verily, mark my words, the football gods will smite Pitt State down for hubris.

Alleman,Nathan kick attempt good.

Well, there's the four of five he's talking about. One being a 42 yard completion.

I don't really get all the upset about the whole running up the score nonsense... tho, maybe it's because I don't watch much college ball. I think it was Soren Petro on the radio the other day asking, "Why is it football is the only sport you're supposed to 'quit' playing when you're up?" I don't think the Yankees quit trying to score more runs when they were up 8-0 last night.

They also might want to think about winning the conference, and maybe doing something in the playoffs. All this kind of stuff does is draw a huge target on their backs.

Pitt's defense stinks and they will be beaten by NW. Their offense looks better this year than in the past, but they STILL insist on starting Philpot over Majors (the better QB). In a perfect world, they'd move Philpot to DE to get some athletes on that side of the ball...

I see Pitt winning big.

Why? There's no reason to think that, besides homerism.

NWMSU is scoring 60 points a game, Pitt is scoring 70 points a game.... the only difference is that Pitt runs up the score and NW doesn't... they're both obviously beating up on the rest of the MIAA, so why does Pitt get a big advantage when they play each other on a neutral site?

Awesome, ain't it? Sometime Saturday I decided to tune in to CMSU's online feed to see how bad we were being slaughtered. To my surprise, we were only down by seven. So, I listened the rest of the game. My half-assed commentary is in my "Holy crap! UMR won a football game!" thread from the start of the season.

That is awesome... when I got off work, I called a guy that went to CMSU... Didn't know what I was going to say, but left a message:

"ROLLA?!?!?!?"

Haven't talked to him in a while, so he probably won't even know who's number it is.

That's the kind of unbelievable win that should get rubbed into CMSU's face for a long time... next year, Rolla should get a big group to travel to CMSU, and no matter who wins, tear down their goalposts :p

Homerism? I went to Missouri Southern I don't like Pitt State. I have alot of friends who went to Northwest. I also have my brothers family who went there and also taught there. SO It would seem that I would pull for Northwest but I am not.

You can post all the stats you want, but they have nothing to do with Pitt State vs Northwest... you're comparing apples with...... something that sucks very badly.

Take away the two 4th quarters Pitt ran up the score, and that 70 becomes more realistic... I mean, really, does scoring 23 against a demoralized team in the 4th have anything to do with their performance against a real team down the road? No.

All the stats show is that NW & Pitt are both much better than their opponents up to this points, and that the game at Arrowhead should be a helluva battle.

Ok, that's twice you've said running up the score. In one, 22 of the 24 fourth quarter plays were running plays. The other game 14 of the 17 were running plays. Plus, you have third string offense in the game.

I dunno, maybe I'm assuming too much? Did they have their 3rd string offense in the game? In one of ENDelt's post, it sounded like they still had quite a bit of urgency in the 4th in a couple of games.

Even if it was their 3rd string offense just running it down their throat, would it make a huge difference against NW? These stats still don't matter.... it's still comparing apples to suck.

I agree, until November 6th, you can't really compare them. Yea, they were playing their third string QB one of them (he's also the back-up free safety). In another, he had a pinched nerve in his neck, and was not available. So, they did only have two QBs for that road game. As always, it's the NW game that everyone looks to. Take care!

I know the stats don't tell the whole story BUT it does show a trend. Have you ever taken a stats class?

Pitt had its 2nd and 3rd string Os in the game.

You asked if scoring 23 points against a team in the 4th have anything to do with their performance against a real team down the road and you stated No. Well you are wrong. They are getting valuble experience and when the time is needed they are there. As opposed to a team that doesn't.

Dude, your stats are getting kind of annoying.

I can remember several years in recent history where going into the game, the Monkeys were the "better" team. Until they beat NW, they are the second best team in the conference.

While your stats may have been relevant and non-repetitive, they were in no way LEGIBLE.

Someone, I think Baby Lee, posted this on another thread. But it's like the episode of the Simpsons where Bart/Lisa wrote something in marker on the back of Homer's head, and he kept trying to turn his head real fast to see what they had written. For a moment they laughed hysterically, then they downgraded to pity, and finally they just walked off feeling bad that they had picked on the oaf. Same deal.

Not at all. I never said PSU was anything less than the #1 team in the nation. I did, however, say they weren't far and away the #1 team in the nation. They aren't.

You said the first meeting wouldn't even be close, and you were wrong. It was a great game, and had our backup QB not thrown 3 horrible passes up for grabs, the outcome would have been a lot different. After that game, I would have ranked them 1a) PSU and 1b) NWMSU. Nothing to hurt about.

Sure, PSU dominated the 4th quarter of the playoff game, and won by 14. Again, nothing to hurt about. They sure as hell didn't dominate the first 3 quarters, and weren't even close to "pounding" the Bearcats.

As for the "no shit" comment, it was in reference to the fact that there's been another discussion going on about the two teams for 4 days on another thread. There's no reason to bump the thread and have a "I told you so" mentality, when your original thought -- that PSU is the best DII football team ever -- is just as asinine now as it was originally.

Wow.
I can top that. When I was a sophomore in Jr. College I was a color guy for a buddy of mine on the radio for an area high school football team. It didn't take me long to figure out why the previous guys who did it quit. The team didn't win a game, only came close once. Only scored in 3 games out of 10 total and were outscored on the season something like 530-26. Lots of 60 point blowouts. It got worse...the eventual state champions in this team's "class" played in our conference, so we had to play them, got them at home. Sure enough, they got it up to a 69-0 blowout..... at halftime. There isn't much to say when that happens. They ended up winning the game 90-0. The best part was late in the 4th quarter they put their JV players in, so we started marching down the field on them. Well they were going for the state record for fewest points allowed in a season, so with a few minutes left and us in the red zone they pulled all 11 guys off the field and brought the entire first string back in, and got the red zone stop without allowing a score. Fun game that was... yeah.

That's what I was thinking. "Best college football team ever" is all it says. And if he only meant best D2 football team ever, there's no need to use the term "pound for pound". So, obviously he meant this team to be compared to the best college football teams ever.

Now, I'm sure that he has some ridiculous way to evaluate that statement, I'm not certain how you would make a comparison between, say, Pitt State and the 2001 Miami team or the mid-90s Nebraska teams, but I'm guessing that he has some formula that puts Pitt State on top of them.

Using ENDelt's formula, I come out with the 2003 Colorado Buffaloes as the greatest college football team of all time. Pound for pound, they had the greatest "lap dance per square inch" ratio of any college football team in history.

Kansas does have some good footbal programs at the lower levels. Butler County Community College was voted the top NJCAA college footbal program in the country.

Current pro players that went to BCCC include Rudi Johnson and our very own William Bartee.

I know they've used the other guy when they've needed to pass, but I agree... VSU was having trouble with Philpot.

Guess they had that short plane ride home to think about it.
