This puts us into the Hex for sure, along with Mexico and Guatemala. Costa Rica and T&T also look to be in good shape, with the closest battle for a second spot in a group being the Jamaica/Panama battle in the group the US now leads with 11 points. Jamaica has 6 and will face a very young US lineup in Columbus in November, and Panama has 5. El Salvador is flailing around with 4, though they still have an outside shot (US beats Jamaica, ES beats Panama). I really don't see the Sallies beating Panama, though.

Landon was absolutely brilliant for 90 minutes (I like Reyna, but that captain's armband fits Landon pretty well; so nice to see him taking the free kicks and corners instead of Reyna, too), and Eddie Johnson scored three poacher-type goals that US teams never seem to put in the net. Two national team appearances, four goals. I think it's safe to say that he's finally broken out.

Toss in a goal that should have been credited to Gooch (Oguchi Onyewu, in his first national team appearance after coming on for Eddie Pope in the 85th minute) instead of being called an own goal, and the future looks pretty damn bright. The second half was a total joy to watch. Really, this post I saw on a soccer forum sums it up:

Holy God, what can I say? All you "USA plays with no style" people. You can sit the (. x. )(. x. )(. x. )(. x. ) down. Landmark performance from the Nats.

Welcome to the inner circle, Eddie Johnson.

Say hello to the armband when Claudio decides to hang 'em up, Landon Donovan.

Was this on the tube?It was on ESPN2.

The Jamaica game is Wednesday, November 17th. It'll be on ESPN or ESPN2, as well.

I'd love to see Clint Dempsey get some PT against Jamaica next month.

it was fun to watch....the US looked "skilled," these weren't cheap goals or penalty shots....though it looked like Panama gave up early in the second...

That second Donovan goal (where he dribbled around the keeper, slid, and punched the ball in after a defender deflected it) and the EJ goal off the LD corner that featured three US headers before Boca flipped it up for Johnson to head it in were the personification of "pretty."

Do you think Freddy Adu will make it to the roster come World Cup time?

Probably not, barring some sort of accelerated Rooney-like explosion. He may make the trip with the team as part of the group that travels to Germany (to let him experience the atmosphere), and he may see the field in some friendlies between now and then, but I doubt he'll play much of a role in either the Qualification process or the Cup itself.

I could see Dempsey, Gaven, and Spector (who looked pretty good when starting for Man U during their early-season injury crisis), plus maybe Szetela, breaking into the picture, though.

I suppose, however, that it's really too early to say.

Any chance of a replay. The game unfortunately fell below, the debate, VCRing the Cards game and TiVOing Rescue Me.

If it had been on FSW, maybe (and that's a maybe; see the Mexico "friendly" back in April... they didn't have the rights to the replay), but on ESPN2? Almost certainly not. They're too busy running Walker's Cay Chronicles or the (I shit you not) National Scrabble Championship or something.

By the way, some more good news: John O'Brien is actually healthy again. He's played in a few Ajax reserve matches already, and may rejoin the first team this weekend.
