Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia and the United States will hold direct negotiations to settle the fate of 124 Saudi prisoners held at the U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Ahmed Mazhar, the chief Saudi lawyer for defending Guantanamo prisoners, said in comments published Monday in the daily al-Watan direct official negotiations scheduled to start soon "are bound to lead to the settlement of that issue in a quicker way than judicial procedures which might take a long time."

He said Pakistan was able to secure the release of many Pakistani prisoners in Guantanamo through direct official negotiations.

Mazhar stressed Saudi lawyers who have taken it upon themselves to defend the Guantanamo prisoners were asked to suspend their efforts pending the outcome of the direct negotiations.

The Saudi prisoners were rounded up by the U.S. forces in Afghanistan during the war for ousting the Taliban regime and its allied al-Qaida network in the fall of 2001.

That would be cool, but maybe some of them go free because of connections.

Do you realize that Saudi justice will be swift and brutal, with virtually no real trial? Why should we spend a ton of money prosecuting these guys when the Saudis will do it for free?

If they get justice, then great. I'm concerned that they'll be released back into Saudi society and be allowed to pick up where they left off...

I guess it's only OK to ask the Saudis to take prisoners instead of dealing with them yourself when the prisoner is Osama Bin Laden.

I would think that part of our "negotiations" would preclude that. Could be that there is more likelihood of them being freed through U.S. courts, though.

If they did then they would look at the TV listings on the internet instead of buying TV Guide. :thumb:
