View Full Version : length of presidential terms

What would you think of modifying the presidential term of office to 5 years? It would give an administration 1 extra year to work on their objectives, and if re-elected 2 extra years. So much of a campaign year gets wasted on running for re-election that it seems like an administration gets only 3-3.5 of work in before the party lines are drawn up tight and everything is dictated by the potential spin impact.

It is a valid argument. Gut instincts say no, but at the same time, why do Senators get 6 years?

I proposed the same thing last year (I can't find the thread!). The exception being that a second full term be allowed. If an administration has done well why deprive people from another term? If it's a failure, 5 years proves it. Other windfalls would be the cost of campaigns reduced by less frequency of them.

If such an idea takes, it makes sense that the first 5 year presidency starts on a calendar year that ends in zero. That puts it at 2020. Plenty of time to work the kinks out.

Yes. As a matter of fact, it should be changed to 10 or why not 20 years...............if Bush wins.

I had always figured it had something to do with making sure we wouldn't have very many occurances in which the Senators and Presidential officials changed hands at the same time...keep in mind that our founding fathers weren't all that great at math. :p There's also the point that Jackson--although he was only a young'n listening to the founders bicker--grew up to believe that every man should be rotated through the Legislative and Executive branches...I would assume he picked this idea up from something he heard one of the Founding Fathers say while he was sitting in on a Congressional Convention.

One Six Year term. Period.Wow, something on which you and I agree. One six year term, no re-election. No campaigning while in office, no need to make compromised decisions simply to get re-elected.

Presidents should serve until death, and be elected by an executive session of Senators, cloaked in secrecy, until they get a 2/3rds vote.

That would lead to a string of assasinations. :shake:

Now if Kerry is elected, maybe you are onto something..... :hmmm:

I am also a fan of the six year term, though I would let them serve non-consecutive terms.

I could definitely get on board with one six-year term. At least we wouldn't have to put up with this god-awful campaign crap as often.

I can't decide if this is proof that it's a great idea or one of the worst ideas of all time :D
