View Full Version : Chargers can't even sell out against the Raiders!

I find it kind of funny not one Charger home game has been broadcast on TV since they ended the ticket guarantee. The NFL has given them a 24 hour extension to sell out this game. They have about 3,000 tickets left to mark it a sell out. And they are winning this year. Maybe everyone is waiting for the annual Charger collapse.

The Raider game has typically had no problems selling out due to all the Raider gang banger wanna be thugs. The game always has problems (fights and such) The Chargers even went so far as to say that if you buy single game tickets for the Raider game you had to purchase the same number of tickets for another game. Not sure if they are doing that this year.

Yes, you still have to buy a 2nd game's ticket for every Raider game ticket you buy.

Ive said it before and ill say it again. Why does the NFL want a team in LA so bad? People out in SoCal are not passionate about Pro Football.

Glad they don't make you do that for the Chiefs game.

Potential $$$. You just can't ignore the second biggest market out there.

Truthfully the Chargers probably sell more tickets than the Chiefs did during the 80s (the equivalent poor performance period by the Chiefs). I believe they are still averaging more than 50000 a game after more than a decade of losing. The Chiefs were only averaging around 35 to 40K as I recall during the 80s.

Definately the issue. They can't ignore the almighty dollar. It is pretty sad that the 2nd largest city in the country and they can't even hold a Football team.

Well sure they've been sh*tty for so many seasons. Maybe that's why the fans don't want to go to games cause of that reason. I hope I don't eat crow at the end of the season for making statements like this.

The stadium the Raidurrs were playing in was a horrible design for a football stadium and also in a crap neighborhood where people were afraid of robbery and/ or physical assault on their person or property. People also have way more entertainment options in SoCal than in places like Green Bay and the other thing is that most of SoCal is made up of people who have moved from other places and who have no loyalty to local teams because they did not grow up rooting for them.

It is silly of the NFL to think they can simply move a team to LA unless they figure out where they can put a stadium. Nobody is going to go if it's the same old, same old.

I agree with you. Right now there is really no place for a Pro team to establish itself in LA. Most likely the team is going to be at best marginal at first and if you are going to have to attend at a pit or decrepit location then the chances for success are slim.

Ooh! It was worse than that. My season ticket number was #13,XXX. I saw a few "crowds" of 20,000. It was pretty quiet in there.

People out in SoCal are not passionate about Pro Football.

NFL is popular in every part of the United States. The NFL television ratings are high in Southern California.

The problem is, a majority of the fans are transplanted Californians that don't support the local teams and they stick with their previous loyalties. Then you have a good share of people here that have grown up in Southern California but have adopted other football teams because they were turned off by the ownership/mediocrity of the teams down here (Georgia Frontiere, Al Davis, Alex Spanos). These three are as bad as owners get.

The fact that this game is have trouble selling out is more about how disinterested RAIDER fans have become, and less about current fan interest in the Chargers...

If the Chargers beat the Raiders this week maybe the fair weather Chargers fans will start attending games and help them sell out a game or two. It's a sad, sad situation :shake:

I've been to Vegas, which is 4 hours from your coast and the home of gambling and all things naughty.

They're BEGGING for a MLB or NFL team. Either one, they'd take either.

You've kicked out one of each.

And you're going to toss $#it on our lawn?...

Wanting an NFL team, and paying the taxes to support one are entirely different issues. Vegas may be interested because they've never had one before... but what if they get stuck with a team like the one they have in San Diego. A team that spends a #1 pick on Ryan Leaf and then passes on Eli Manning. A team that ships away all its veteran talent once they become free agents (Seau, Parella, Harrison). A team that threatens to sue the city in order to get a better stadium deal.

That kind of failure won't cut it in cities like Vegas, LA, or SD because the entertainment market's too competitive. If you want to sell in these cities, you absolutely have to put out a winner. If you don't everyone will walk away NOT because they lack the passion, or the commitment, or the loyalty. They'll walk away because the casinos and strip clubs are a hell of a lot more entertaining than watching their football team get its ass kicked.

we didnt pass on eli, he was picked, then traded for 2 #1's and other picks. Seau, and harrison were cut..parella was the only one that was given up to FA. The team sued the city to get a new stadium, but if you're going to fault the Chargers, you also have to blame Al Davis for suing Oakland for promised sellouts. Why did he sue the city of Oakland....and not the mythical Raider Nation that we keep hearing about. The fans should be blamed for attendance. An entire nation of fans can at least sell out the stadium once in awhile. The chargers have attendance issues, but they didnt sue the city over it.

- I disagree about Manning. You had the first pick in the draft, and you gave him up for the third best QB in the draft and some draft picks. Stupid move in my opinion.

- You raise good points about Seau and Harrison... but it seems they still had quite a bit left in their tanks when they were let go by the Chargers. I think both those situations were poorly handled by that organization.

- As for Davis, I have little respect for the way he's currently marketing the RAIDERS, and I put the blame completely on him for turning the RAIDERS into the Chargers. But your shot at the "Raider Nation" has no substance since the RAIDERS managed to sell out 2 home games this year before their season fell apart.

Ding Ding Ding we have a winner! That is exactly why this game is not sold out.

Being a Chief fan in the San Diego area I only go the the Charger Chiefs game unless somebody gives me a ticket to any other game.

The fact of the matter is there are too many attractions that take away from football here. And there are many like me who root for their home teams. When the Chargers went to the Superbowl the town went nuts and all the bandwagon fans came out. They never reached the fevered pitch it does in KC any given day but they tried.

Well since the league gave a 24 hour extension. Some company came in and bought up the remaining tickets to mark it a sell out.

They are going to distribute them to Local Police and Fire Departments. Which I think is a pretty cool move.

I think the Chargers did the smart thing regarding Manning.
They were told that Eli wouldn't play for them if he was drafted by them, and with his dad and brother for support, I doubt that it was an idle threat.

I don't think that Eli wanted to miss a season, but he wouldn't have signed if drafted.

As for Leaf, you can lay that one at Bobby Beathard's feet.
He was warned about Leaf's mental makeup.
He just ignored that warning.

The fact is that Beathard, more than Spanos, is responsible for the terrible team that has played there for the the better part of a decade.

Not to mention trading away a lot of high round draft picks for a number of years.
