Detroit to Host 40th Annual Super Sunday in 2006

With a monicker such as XL one would expect the logo for Super Bowl 40 -- officially known as Super Bowl XL to envoke something extra large.

The National Football League unveiled the logo for Super Bowl XL today in Detroit, a logo that was anything but "extra large". The logo is no more than a red X next to a blue L with "Super Bowl" written across the letters.

The words "Super Bowl" in the logo were designed to mimic an odometer on a dashboard. At a news conference to unveil the logo, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said preparations for the Detroit Super Bowl were "going extremely well'' and that Detroit's host committee "is really ahead of the curve at this point.''

"Detroit understands that the world is comign to our town, and will be ready to get in the game.'' added the Mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick.

The game will be held at Ford Field on February 5, 2006.

What is with the lines behind the letters? Almost looks like the "C" from the Blackhawks logo.
