ABC mum on plans for KC

Chiefs offering pregame ideas for Monday night

By RANDY COVITZ The Kansas City Star

Stung by criticism from its controversial intro for Monday night's Dallas-Philadelphia game, ABC Sports is not revealing its intentions for the upcoming Chiefs-Patriots game on “Monday Night Football.”

But players from both teams offered suggestions Thursday for what they'd like to see in the spot that will lead into Monday night's game at Arrowhead Stadium.

“I'd do something like out of ‘Bachelor Party,' ” Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez said, referring to a racy movie. “Something to liven this group up. Everyone's down right now, not having fun.”

Gonzalez said he was not offended by the lead-in to last Monday night's telecast — which featured Philadelphia wide receiver Terrell Owens and a towel-shedding Nicollette Sheridan — though he understood some of the outcry.

“I can see where people are coming from,” Gonzalez said. “I'm from California. I went to the University of California. I'm a liberal, so that's no big deal to me.”

Would Gonzalez have agreed to appear in a spot featuring a naked woman?

“I probably would have done it, but in hindsight, no,” he said. “I would have made the mistake and done it. But looking back and seeing the repercussions, no way. I wasn't offended. I thought it was cool. Every red-blooded man out there enjoyed it.”

New England wide receiver David Givens didn't think any member of the Patriots would have agreed to appear in such a scene.

“There are a lot of things that can be done,” Givens said. “I would probably pick a scene from the movie ‘Gladiator' and take our whole team walking out as a team, maybe show some sort of fight from that movie that exemplifies doing whatever it takes … something that has to do with a team effort.”

Chiefs kick returner Dante Hall said he liked the intro but called it inappropriate for network television.

“I liked it if it was on HBO or Cinemax or something,” Hall said. “But for ABC ‘Monday Night Football' … I didn't get it. I didn't get the tie into football. If you're selling a team concept, you're going to tell the team, ‘You're going to have to win without me?'

“That doesn't set a good example for young players at all. But I liked seeing her drop that towel. That was nice. T.O. goes out and does controversial things. Me, I avoid controversy. So I wouldn't have done it.”

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, one of the NFL's most eligible bachelors, doesn't expect to see any actresses near his locker.

“It is getting a lot of attention, as it probably should,” Brady said. “Anything to get people to watch the game, I guess. You think the football would be good enough to get people to watch. They don't need to promote it that way. I think it is them trying to get more viewers.”

At halftime of this Monday's telecast, ABC will present a retrospective of the career of Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil. In an interview taped during the off-season, Vermeil discussed his initial decision to retire from football in 1982 when he was at Philadelphia; his Super Bowl championship with St. Louis, and the relationship he has with his players.

Vermeil, who worked for ABC Sports as an analyst before joining the Rams in 1997, said he had not seen the controversial spot but added: “I don't think there's any place for it on television. In the NFL, a guy gets fined $5,000 for jumping in the bleachers. So I don't know what you fine those people for doing that.”

By the way, Owens finished the Monday night game at Dallas with three touchdowns.

As far as the Chiefs go a spin of the new ABC series "Lost" seems appropriate :(

I'd love to see an intro like this:

Wizard of Oz. They can go with Dorothy to ask the Wizard for a defense.

Then they can add in the line "We're not in Kansas anymore" somewhere just to piss off everyone who is overly sensitive about the Chiefs being in Missouri.

they should have an intro where a mouse is let lose in the locker room and all the defensive players start screaming and crying and jumping up on chairs...

..get it? they're p@ssies....

I love the quotes from out guys here....

Tony: "Every red-blodded man loved it..."
Dante: "I sure did love seeing her drop that towel!"

Cracks me up. At least our guys are real and honest, and not trying to be ridiculously PC about the whole thing.

Well, it's one thing to say you loved it and it was not appropriate, ala Dante, and another thing to pretend it was appropriate so you don't have to feel guilty for loving it...

Dante was at least honest about it. :thumb:

Yeah. Tony basically said the same thing, too. He basically said, "In hindsight, I can see how it shouldn't have aired. I still enjoyed it, though."

What ABC should have done the same exact thing with Tony G. as they did with T.O. but after giving the "Trent Green is relying on me, the city is relying on me" speech Tony should walk out of the lockerroom and bump into Trent. Trent should say "what's going on?" Tony should reply "we've got a game" and Trent should look into the lockerroom see the babe in the towel and say "go on without me, Collins has been doing well in practice" and he should jump into Nicollette's arms.

Here's an interesting idea for an intro: Show clips of all the great plays each team has made in the season leading up to this game. Mention some of the star players and the impact they're having in the league. Talk about something football related. Novel concept, huh?

I'm no prude. I drink and cuss. I like strippers and porn. I'm as male as any other guy out there. But I don't tune into football games to see sex. There are plenty of other channels that I can find that on. The NFL is the greatest pro sport in the world, they don't need to spice it up. For the record, I feel the same way about all of the stupid concerts they show at pre-game and during halftime. Britney, or aerosmith, Janet or Justin. None of this has anything to do with football. I don't expect to catch good sports action while I'm at a concert or watching a porno either.

The fact that ABC ambushed families during what's been established as family television just makes it that much more despicable. And this is the channel that had stations boycotting Saving Private Ryan because of content. Don't insult my intelligence.

Truthfully, jsp makes a good point. Football time should be about football.

I must admit that I kind of like some of those MNF openings with the Hank Williams song. All of the other music stuff should just be banished, especially the lame-o halftime shows at the Super Bowl. I'd much rather see dog frisbee or something.

Somebody do a computer re animation of Howard voicing over some plays. Surely with computers and all the tape, they can put together something that would EXAGERATE the gravity of the game the way he could.

Thanks, Hank. A few people have dinged me with "where were you when we were 9-0?" and the answer is Baghdad.

When I first got home, football seemed very insignificant. I think you can understand that. Now that a little time has gone by, its still inconsequential in the big scheme of things, but I weigh in once in a while here. Its amazing how close to predicting how things would actually go I got in '2001...not that I'm happy about the way the Chiefs are tanking with all this offensive talent.

Dante gets it!!!!

You are no more intellegent than a man that gets his head bashed into the ground returning balls for a living.

It had nothing to do about football. It is about making money and nothing else. Networks lose money showing football games , so they have to sell other shows during football to make a profit. If you don't have the time to come up with a "Leon", Budweiser Frog, or some other super catchy advertisement, all you have to do is show a half naked woman and you will capture the same attention.

Why are all of you sensitive, whiny, anti-war, John Kerry types complaining about ABC showing a racey scene on Monday at 8 pm, when they show the exact same thing every Saturday at 8pm?

KC Kings

Oh yeah, for commercials redo the "What's Uuup?" line, with the defense calling eac other and saying , "We Suuuuuck!". Then at the end when all the D is saying "We Suuuck!" all together, Priest Holmes will cut them all off with a "Keep the Faith!", then Jared Allen will run out and punch him in the knee and the end the commercial with a close up of the team posing with a cheesy smile, ala Chips.

The Friends Theme could actually be pretty good.

(Show a clip of the defense)

So no one told you life was gonna be this way
Your jobs a joke, you're broke
Your love life's DOA

It's like you're always stuck in second gear
And when it hasn't been your day, your week, your month
Or even your year, but

(Switch to a clip of the offense)

I'll be there for you
When the rain starts to fall
I'll be there for you Like I've been there before
I'll be there for you
Cuz you're there for me, too.
