Cool little book by Russ Kick - 50 Things You Aren't Supposed to Know

Ghandi refused to let his wife take penicillin, yet he took quinine to save himself.

Ghandi is often ranked, directly if not subtly, alongside Jesus Christ and Martin Luther King, Jr. as one of the greatest peacemakers - indeed, one of the greatest human beings - of all time. The mythology that surrounds him - which he built, leaving his followers and admirers and hagiographers to reinforce and embellish - has almost completely smothered many unflattering facts about him.

In August 1942, Ghandi and his wife, Kasturba, were imprisoned by the British in Aga Khan palace near Poona. Kasturba developed bronchial pneumonia. One of her four sons, Devadas, wanted her to take penicillin, but Ghandi refused. He stated on the Almighty should heal her. "If God wills it, pull her through." When she died he said he denied her the medicine because it would have "meant the bankruptcy of my faith".

But Ghandi's faith wasn't an obstacle a short time later when it was his ass on the line. A mere six weeks after Kasturba died, Ghandi was flattened by malaria. He stuck to a liquid diet from the Ghanges and refused quinine to die of the disease, right? Nope, he took the drug knowing the trust in God only applied when it came to his wife and not himself.

You just know that he enjoyed a good porterhouse once in a while, too.

He also is known for living in poverty and living a simple pious life, Etc..
He was loaded. His family had big bucks. He was sent to England to study at Oxford and partied like they did in Animal House.
Booze, women, {maybe drugs} and he wore the most expensive clothes.

I know, as beatific as Ghandi was, there was somebody in a Bombay bar going, "I know Ghandi, he was a prick. I saw him sucking on a pork hotdog, hitting on Mother Teressa; he kept saying, 'Who's your diaper daddy, who's your diaper daddy!' I saw that, I saw that with my own eye, and if you don't believe me I'll bitch slap you like Shiva."

Yup, Kick mentions that as well as the fact that he was a severe racist.

FWIW, the title of the thread should be "Gandhi the Hypocrite", not "Gandhi the Killer" (unless, of course, he gave her the bronchial pneumonia, which is, err, unlikely at best).

But point taken. :)

Ghandi was a Hindu. Hindus are all about males. I wonder if this would be the normal for Hindus. I think so, but Ghandi did also speak out against the caste system, so who knows...

It was his fault she was in prison. I think the whole Indian independence thing was just a cover to get rid of a nagging wife.

Why am I not surprised? Gandhi single-handedly created a nation of cowards and is the architect of the islamic-sucking theory which indian politicians have been following since. To think of, the gandhi and nehru dynasty has moved India to bankruptcy economically and culturally.

coming to the topic, I didn't know about this piece before. In India, you hear gandhi worshippers everywhere (a political thing) and anything negative about their family gets automatically censored. Thanks for the info.

I'm not sure I would take anything on that site as "truth."

It's put up by Stormwatch, a division of the Aryan Brotherhood.

What, did they hire that fake reporter from the New York Times?

Oh. Probably not, now that I think about it.

Speaking of odd truths...

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything."*

Wow. I just found this in another search.

"In a stunning development, historians today discovered that footage of Abraham Lincoln chasing Mexicans from his swift riverboat during the Mexican-American War was not actual footage of the event.

Lincoln trumpeted his role in the war extensively during his campaign of 1860, including some explosive allegations that he was sent to Chihuahua during the Christmas of 1847, in direct conflict with U.S. war policy at the time. The footage showed Lincoln bursting through the underbrush exchanging fire with Mexican irregulars who had fired upon his swift riverboat moments earlier. Lincoln received a Purple Heart after being struck during the engagement.

Historians have now learned that the film was not a real-life recording of the event, but rather a recreation filmed later. Historian Hannibal Hamlin noted that the first clue for historians was realizing that moving pictures were invented nearly 60 years after the Mexican-American War."
