No bowls, no playoffs in area for first time since '89
JEFFREY FLANAGAN
We had a fairly good run in these parts when it came to football. But that run is over.
Barring an absolute miracle rally by the Chiefs and a colossal collapse from the teams above them, this will be the first time this area has not experienced professional or Division I-A postseason football in 15 years. Fifteen years.
The year was 1989, the year of the Exxon Valdez and the Menendez brothers and Ted Bundy's execution and the Bay Area earthquake.
It was also a major sports transition year around here.
It was Marty Schottenheimer's first season with the Chiefs, Bob Stull's first season with Mizzou, Bill Snyder's first season at Kansas State and Glen Mason's second season at Kansas.
Except for Stull, all those coaches eventually resurrected their teams into the postseason and kept us busy during the holidays.
Marty got his Chiefs to the playoffs after the 1990 season, losing to Miami 17-16 and then kept them a postseason threat throughout his stay here in the '90s.
Mason got his Jayhawks to the Aloha Bowl in 1992. Snyder started his string of bowl games in 1993 with the Copper Bowl.
Even Missouri and new coach Larry Smith began to chip in with a Holiday Bowl appearance in 1997.
But the string is about to end
