Greetings from the night side!

Anyone around tonight (gonna be here for a while)?

I'll be here till 7 a.m. Last week the topic of discussion was in the Alexander thread... what's the topic for tonight? More movies, music, Chiefs?

I saw the screening of Closer, and I must say... strange. It's a very difficult movie to talk about. The cast is good, and Natalie Portman proves she can act after the dribble she had to use in the Star Wars prequels. Jude Law is good, as always.

This week coming, I've got press screenings for Ocean's 12 and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera.

I enjoyed Ocean's 11, but I'm hesitant to believe Ocean's 11 will be anything different. It'll be more Hollywood churned crap targeting the same audience with the same tired story... just with a new cast member. It's a formula movie, but it will probably be enjoyable.

Phantom... I'm a little torn over. Director Joel Schumacher single-handedly destroyed the Batman franchise. But usually, I like his work -- as long as it's not Batman. While not great movies, Phonebooth, Tigerland, Falling Down, Flatliners, and The Lost Boys were enjoyable. Stylistically, Schumacher is first rate. His production design ranks with the best of them.

Now, I'm a HUGE fan of the stage play. I've seen it six times in venues from KC, to St. Louis, to Springfield, to Louisville, KY. I know it backwards and forwards. I'm not the usual guy that says "Michael Crawford is the only Phantom." While I like Crawford a lot, I've seen and heard others who would give him a run for his money. I'm just glad it's not Antonio Banderas as was the original rumor when production on this film began.

I'm a little nervous about this release, really. I like the play so much I really don't want to see Schumacher f__k it up. But one thing it has going for it -- Webber signed off on it. That helps. We'll see.

What else is going on around here?

Luckily i will be in Houston most of the next month and it has an Angelica. I havent been to a movie there yet but i really need too.

Miles,

Haven't seen The Machinist... there haven't been any screenings for it, but I've been keeping my eye out.

Has anyone here been over to The Screenland Theatre? I was there for the screening of Alexander three weeks ago and again this past week for Closer... really neat place. If you get a chance, it's worth a visit. Historical landmark at 17th and Washington in KCMO, converted to a big theater. It's an arthouse, but I think they'll be playing The Aviator, in the lease so check it out.

Seriously, though... My wife, who is normally INSANE about Christmas isn't really in the mood this year... kinda depressing, really. We don't have much money and she's a little bummed that we won't be able to do as much as we normally do. So now she's just not really her normal holiday self. I came home the other night and she'd gone up to the attic to get wrapping paper and the small tree.... nothing else, just those things.

So I think I need to do something... any suggestions? I'm not usually the holiday type -- not really a Scrooge, but I'd be very happy with just a tiny tree and wrapping paper, but this is her favorite time of year and she just isn't in the mood this year.

One day when she's out of the house, decorate it. Have all the lights blazing and some Christmas music on when she gets home and just tell her that you don't care about the presents or the parties or any of the material things that may go along with most peoples' ideas about what makes a wonderful Christmas - you just want to have a nice holiday with her.

Either that or buy her a Lexus, which may actually work better.

I'd thought about that (not the Lexus part). That's probably what I'll do... but DAMN. I hate decorating. It doesn't help that we won't be home for the holidays. I've written a couple, only to discover that I'm not a writer. I produce and direct for my production company, Censored Entertainment (no, it's not porn, I just have thing for titles that are contradictory -- in college, I produced a show called Variety, Limited). I've got a partner in Censored Entertainment who's the writer, then of course we look at submissions. We just optioned a script from a guy in St. Louis. I should get it in the mail in the very near future. Check my profile and go to the website if you want to send us something. We'll take a look at it. Right now, we're booked to produce Five Days and 50 Conversations About Nothing next summer (the script we just optioned) , the probably hit This Spirit Apparatus thereafter (which is written by my partner).

In that case, check out "Stacey's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne. It is a blatant ripoff of The Cars, circa 1983 or so. Should be right up your alley.

Never heard of it, and I don't think I care to- particularly if it's a rip off of The Cars who were a rip off to music itself.

If you have a Yahoo account, login and go check out the video. It's worth it. Features Rachel Hunter. To Fountains of Wayne's credit, they made no bones about admitting who they ripped off, and it shows in the video - hell, the license plate on the car says "I Love Ric"...

Wait a minute...

The Cars are a rip off of music, but the Grease Soundtrack - featuring Sha-Na-Mother-F***ing-Na is a classic? Is this what you're telling me?

My wife hates it, too... and truthfully, I know deep down that I should hate the f***ing song, too... but I can't help it, man. I dig the f*** out of that song! It comes on my head starts rocking with the music and next thing you know, I'm singing along and throwing my arms around in some spasmatic-white-boy-trying-to-imitate-a-rapper dance thing that I should be embarassed about but aren't... ROFL

I'm with ya, man. Don't tell anybody.
