Five Dead Include Gunman in Ohio Shooting
Five Killed, Two Injured in Ohio Nightclub After Gunman Opens Fire During Heavy Metal Concert
The Associated Press

Dec. 9, 2004 - A man walked onstage in a crowded nightclub during a rock concert Wednesday night and opened fire, killing at least four people and wounding at least two others before he was shot to death by police, authorities said.

Members of the heavy metal band Damageplan had just begun their first song at the Alrosa Villa when the man opened fire on the band, initially shooting the guitarist, who went by the name "Dimebag Darrell," a witness said. According to the band's Web site, the guitarist and another member, drummer Vinnie Paul, are formerly of the heavy metal band Pantera.

The witness, 22-year-old Chris Couch, said he was standing about 30 feet away from the stage when he noticed a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and hockey jersey walk up to the stage, followed by a bouncer and another club employee.

The man in the jersey climbed onto the stage, started yelling and shot the guitarist five or six times at close range, Couch said. Couch said the gunman also shot a bouncer who pulled him off the musician.

Columbus police spokesman Sgt. Brent Mull said a police officer shot and killed the gunman. It wasn't immediately clear whether the officer was already at the show or had responded to an emergency call. Authorities didn't immediately provide the identities of the victims.

After the shooting began, Couch and a friend headed for the exit along with a tide of hundreds of fans.

"It was definitely a grudge. It was against something," Couch said.

Amanda Stankus, 19, who attended the show with Couch, said she initially thought the shooting was part of the show. "I just saw the guitarist fall down, and we decided to get out of there," she said.

Other members of Damageplan include vocalist Patrick Lachman and bass player Bob Zilla, according to the band's Web site.

RIP Darrell....

I saw this on the news this morning. This is indeed a terrible story, but there is something funny about hearing Katie Couric actually say..."Dimebag"

I'm in shock that people out there are so out of their minds that they would even contemplate doing this. What a shame. RIP.

Howard had a guy on the radio from the concert who says the shooter was yelling something about messing up Pantera.
Guess he didn't like the new group.

Police Identify Alleged Gunman In DIMEBAG DARRELL's Murder - Dec. 9, 2004

Police released the name of the gunman who allegedly went on a shooting rampage at a Columbus nightclub Wednesday night, killing four people including DAMAGAEPLAN guitarist Dimebag Darrel before a police officer shot him dead.

Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville, reportedly jumped onto a concert stage and opened fire, NBC 4 reported.

It appears to be something as petty as that..

I'm not a big metal fan but honest to God you cannot find anyone here in Dallas that has a bad thing to say about Dimebag Darrell. Everyone who's ever met him around here describe him as being really down to earth and cool as hell to his fans. They are actually having a memorial bash tonight at stripclub that Vinnie Paul owns. What was funny was listening to one of the strippers saying that they kept working when they heard the news because Darrell would have wanted it that way.
