Lamar Hunt is selling the Wizards. He says they are a drain on the Chiefs and Arrowhead. He said he has to sell them because Bi-State II didn't pass. He said he and the Chiefs can't take any more financial losses. When I heard this, I wondered if he was sending a signal to KC. Maybe he's saying that this is what can happen to the Chiefs too if he doesn't get a new stadium.

It pains me to say this, but I just heard that stupid bastard Jack Harry say the same thing.

What do you think? :hmmm:

When I heard it the first thing I thought about was his health & if that has taken a downturn.

Your kidding? Is he really moving them?

Your kidding? Is he really moving them? Yes, it's all over the news. He's selling the Wizards. But all of the experts think no one will buy them. They aren't worth the $10 million asking price. Therefore, Lamar will just shut down the team.

Lamar's actual words (http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20041209&content_id=20051&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp)

He's selling the team because of Bi-State II, that much appears to be true. Fact of the matter, however, is that they're far from a "drain" on the Chiefs. At worst, they're a tax write-off, and the only big drain remaining in the league is the money hole that is the Metros' home. Playing in Giants Stadium is extremely expensive (which is why they're working on getting a new stadium in Harrison, NJ), and with the league being in a single-entity setup, everyone foots part of the bill for it.

Hunt Sports Group will still own the Columbus Crew and FC Dallas, the latter of which was much more of a drain in the 2003 and 2004 seasons than the Wiz could have been in their worst year. HSG greatly offended the largely-hispanic Dallas Burn fanbase by moving to Dragon Stadium (a high-school football stadium with permanent, gaudy football markings) in a far-away suburb called Southlake for the 2003 season. Crowds suffered in 2003, falling to under 8,000 per game (the worst in league history), and they were last in the league yet again this year, despite moving back to the Cotton Bowl.

Thing is, they're keeping the Burn -- err, FC Dallas -- because... they're getting a new stadium. They're not just having soccer games at the new stadium, they're also hosting concerts and even high-school football championship games at the new 20,000-seater. New stadiums are money-generators for more reasons than one. The Home Depot Center, home to the Galaxy (and CD Chivas USA, who will be paying AEG for the right to play in the HDC, in 2005) is a huge sports complex in itself, but the main stadium, the soccer stadium, held X Games Moto-X events this past summer.

So that's four teams (Crew, FCD, Galaxy, and Chivas) that will all have SSSs next year. That's a third the league's twelve teams. In 2006, Chicago and perhaps even Colorado will be coming online. 2007 should bring new stadiums for a number of clubs, including Real Salt Lake, the Metrostars, and the new Colorado stadium, if it's not completed in 2006. DC and San Jose are also actively pursuing stadiums (and an owner in the Quakes' case, which the Wiz situation has suddenly started to mirror; AEG wants out, and Soccer Silicon Valley, formed by the fans, is desperately trying to find a local owner so the team isn't sold -- to the group that owns the Mexican Futbol League franchise Club America -- and moved to Houston).

Long story short, the league should have no less than half of its teams in soccer-specific stadiums by 2007 or 2008. The league just signed a 10-year agreement with adidas to be the league's official kit supplier (like the NFL's deal with Reebok), and things are rapidly moving into place for expansion in two more cities in 2006 or 2007.

What does this mean? Well, if the Wiz can't get a new owner and a new stadium, they're outta KC. Question is, does Lamar possibly already have one lined up? There were actually rumors floating around just before the press conference that the Wiz would move to Rochester, which has been pursuing a franchise for a while and is one of the frontrunners for team #13 or #14. Barring some miraculous event that leads to Memphis getting them, I hope they stay in KC, but this is extremely strange timing.

From a Wizards forum, during the announcement:

He's a talkin about the advantages of a SSS.

Holy crap. This is awesome.Oops?

From MLS commissioner Don Garber:

As one of the founders of Major League Soccer, Lamar Hunt is a true pioneer who has helped establish the sport and carry it to new heights, and his commitment remains steadfast. It is a priority for the League that new ownership groups are added, and that each team plays in a soccer stadium. We look forward to working with the Hunt Sports Group in identifying new ownership for Kansas City in the weeks to come.Additionally, Lamar is not opposed to the new ownership keeping the team in Arrowhead on a temporary basis, but basically suggests that they get a SSS as soon as possible.

There is someone with money in KC who likes the Wizards: Lamar Hunt.

You better hope there's another one, too.

Man. Not too different from having a Brazilian supermodel giving you the eye from across the bar and when you walk up to talk to talk to her, she knees you in the sack.

Oh well.
I love all the metaphors people are coming up with. It's like when a chick throws a drink in your face then you say something wity to your friends to distract them from your rejection.

The thing that strikes me the most is that in the past several years, KC attendance has gone up, and the front office has done a good job of getting the team better known in the community, and local sponsors have done ticket promotions (Price Chopper). Hunt himself has even gotten involved with season ticket drives. Why throw that all away now, just when things seem to be starting to pay off?

Or maybe the realization is that despite all these efforts, the bottom line is that it costs the Wizards too much to do all this, and even with modest increases in attendance and even playing nearly rent-free in Arrowhead, there still isn't enough of an upside to keep it going?

Kind of like the opposite of how the Revolution have been doing things. Now if you were to swap Kraft for Hunt in this situation, would anyone be shocked? Probably not, because the perception is that the Revs are run on the cheap, and the Krafts "don't care." Maybe they were right all along...

Lamar Hunt a "sad sack of shit"? Thats pretty harsh.
At Lamars age i don't think all he is concerned about at this point is making more money.

Stop wasting my time
You know what I want
You know what I need
Or maybe you don't

Do I have to come right flat out
And tell you everything
Give me some money!
Give me some money!

I'm nobody's fool
I'm nobody's clown
I'm treatin' you cool
I'm putting you down

But baby, I don't intend to leave
Empty-handed
Give me some money!
Give me some money!

Go Nigel, go!
Aww, yeah!
