Shanahan says Plummer will be returning in 2005

For those who thought Mike Shanahan and Jake Plummer could be elsewhere in 2005, that appears unlikely. Shanahan's statements in the past week should end speculation on the futures of the coach and the quarterback in Denver.

Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday that quarterback Jake Plummer
will be back for the 2005 season. Plummer is due a $6 million roster bonus in March.

Reiterating owner Pat Bowlen's comments about Plummer's future, Shanahan has publicly said Plummer will be back with the Broncos in 2005. Plummer, who has often said he doesn't worry about the situation, is due a $6 million roster bonus in March.

Shanahan ended speculation last week about his interest in other NFL and college jobs by saying he intends to honor the final four years of his contract.

Now it's clear Shanahan has plans for the future of the Broncos.

"That's true," he said with a smile.

Asked about the comments he made to ESPN about Plummer, Shanahan said, "I made a statement about Jake's future, and I look forward to working with him over the next several years."

The $6 million option will be paid as a bonus, and Plummer's base salary increases from $660,00 to $3.3 million next year. He signed a seven-year contract in 2003.

Plummer said through a team spokesman Thursday that he still hasn't heard from the NFL about a possible fine stemming from an incident in Sunday's 20-17 victory over Miami in which Plummer gave a heckling fan an obscene gesture. CBS-TV cameras were on Plummer after he was intercepted, with 6:10 left in the first quarter.

Plummer was sitting on Denver's bench and wearing a cap. He was caught on camera raising a hand and using an obscene gesture with his middle finger.

Plummer apologized publicly after the game and made it known his gesture was directed at one fan in particular.

A NFL spokesman said Thursday the league will have an announcement today on a possible fine.
