View Full Version : I just got ambushed by a frickin' bat!

I'm walking down to the laundry room to pick up my last load of laundry for the evening when I hear a rustle in the palm tree that is but a few feet away from me. I look up and around and see a little brown flash before my eyes, and thinking that it was to fast to be a falling leaf I continued to try and follow it. I never got a real close look at the speedy little bastard, but I saw the wings well enough to identify it as most certainly a bat. What the hell? I have not heard of bats living in this neck of the woods before (of course, I am not always the most observant of people...). I think zoo officials have to be out looking for an escapee or something.

There's ton's and ton's of bats down there.

Do a search on Austin, bridge, and bats sometime. In fact, go one better and check it out some weekend.

Never heard anyone mention bats down here before, and have never come across any. So I was a bit stunned.

I'll look into it.

My four year old went down to Austin with my Mom to visit my sister. They went to that bat bridge, and he is now a bat fanatic. I never thought a flying rat could outdo crocodiles, snakes, sharks or dinosaurs, but they did for him. He'll tell you the same story about them 20 times a day if you don't stop him.

There were millions of the little bastards in the trees by where I lived lived growing up. They would make this screechy sound that only bats can make. You would walk down the bike trail and suddenly there would be a ton of em making that noise flying about. They were harmless though. I imagine they scared the hell out of a lot of people though.

We have an old tobacco warehouse across the street from us. In the evening you see around 2000 to 3000 flying in and out of the place.

Never been bothered by them and we don't have a serious bug or mosquito problem around here.

Is has been said that walking sticks are their favorite meal..... Jamie, BEWARE.

I know I've told the story before about my last house, in my bachelor days.........sitting in the man-chair in the BVDs watching TV and felt something *Slap* me in the back of the head, look up for the boogie man, and it turns out there were 2 bats divebombing the room..........It was a horrendous Fight with the door open, snapping at the damn things with a towel as they circled, yelling like I was taking scalps. I'd imagine those neighbors still talk about that.

not long after that, I woke up in the morning with some puncture wounds in the palm of my hand...My park ranger pal said it was a bat bite.........I was stubborn and didn't go get the shots........and lucky.

a year or so later, a 20 year old kid from not far away died of rabbies from a bat bite.

Isn't it like a large number of rather unpleasant shots to the stomach? I could see wanting to avoid that. Tho, I suppose I'd choose it over death.

Its just a series of 4-5 shots in the Shipping dept loading dock from what I was told.......but they hurt like a futhermucker I hear.

I guess its better than dead..........Knowing now, I'd probably have gone in and got them.
