View Full Version : If you were a football GM/coach, how would you build your team?

Imagine that an average player is 5 points, a scrub is a 1, and a star is a 10. You get 120 points to build your team, which equates to all 5's (24 positions x 5 points, counting kicker and punter) if you'd like, or any other combination that adds up to 120.

Here's what my roster would look like. I'd give myself a superstar running back with a couple of good linemen on one side to run behind, and go with a conservative offense. On defense, I'd build one above-average player at DE, DT, MLB, and give myself 2 good CBs, and put them out on an island with a high-pressure defensive plan.

What would you do?

I'm not asking him to carry the team on his shoulders. We're a team here.

I'd want strong players at the Left Tackle , QB and HB positions, a WR who could give the opponent's best CB some problems and a stout defensive front.

I would get an excellent line on both sides of the ball. A top oline can improve the whole offense. A top Dline can take advantage of a poor line of the other side. CBs would be important as well to cover in man coverage when needed on a blitz or to allow a zone to be more efficient. But with the rules the way they are now, perhaps a good set of receivers and a good QB in the Colts mold would be best.

That's so true. An excellent offensive line can improve the play of shit QBs, shit RBs and shit WRs. An excellent D-Line can improve the play of shit corners, shit safeties and shit linebackers. Shit shit shit!

Yeah, I know what you mean. It all comes down to field position with those guys. If you can get good position on kickoffs and punts, that's good. On the other hand, with field goal kickers, what separates the adequate from the good is probably how much better they are at converting 40+ yarders.

I figured that an average kicking team should give you good results on both dimensions (1. Field position 2. Ability to make long FG).

I'd be willing to go with less-than-average performance on dimension 2, in exchange for having a better team elsewhere.

I'm entertained by teams that win. You can't win without some sort of passing game, which the 1996 Chiefs demonstrated in December of that year, which they started at 9-4 and ended at 9-7.
