I'm constantly arguing at work with these 2 idiots (ksushark & tyton75 about stupid little chit.)

Today I send them this 3d image that's a great piece of artwork and they respond back saying that it isn't art. Since they always team up and think they're always right please help me see that, I'm in the wrong in this case or if my suspicions of them being idiots are correct.

Definition of art:
[n] the creation of beautiful or significant things; "art does not need to be innovative to be good"; "I was never any good at art"; "he said that architecture is the art of wasting space beautifully"
[n] the products of human creativity; works of art collectively; "an art exhibition"; "a fine collection of art"
[n] a superior skill that you can learn by study and practice and observation; "the art of conversation"; "it's quite an art"
[n] photographs or other visual representations in a printed publication; "the publisher was responsible for all the artwork in the book

Site this stuff came from... Really nice computer generated ARTWORK! (http://raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/ag-co.html)

Dude have you seen some paintings where people just squirt paint on canvas and call it art?

Tyton75:

conclusion: He's basing art off of if he likes it or not and not oening his mind that almost everything can be considered art.

I only looked at a few of those, and they all qualify as art to me... The fact is, it is just a different media... The ultimate idea is that they are drawing pictures, and expressing themselves as artists with the media that they know how to use... There is nothing wrong with that.

The lines of objectivity are very blurred when it comes to this subject. I'm currently in a play called "The Shape of Things" that deals with this subject quite in depth. The idea is this, and I quote (since this is my monologue I've got it memorized... OK Paraphrized)

"When Picasso took a shit he didn't call it a sculpture, he knew the difference that's what made him Picasso. And if I'm wrong about that, and if somehow puking up all your own shitty little neurosis all over everybodies laps is somehow art, then you oughta at least realize that somebody pays for it all, you know... Somebody pays for your two minutes on CNN. Someone always pays for people like you. And if you don't see that, if you can't see at least that much, then you're about two inches away from using babies to make lampshades and calling it furniture... Look, I know it's called the art scene, but that's not all it should make, a scene. Anybody can be provacative, or shocking, or whatever... Paint yourself blue... Stand up in class or church and take a piss... Run around naked yelling out all the names of people you've slept with, is that 'art' or did you just forget to take your Ritalin? See, there has to be a line. For art to exist there has to be a line somewhere between really having something to say, and just needing attention... I guess I'm done..."

What's funny about this is that you might have just thrown it together, and it's not half bad. According to the REAL standards of art, you have pieced together a nice little blend of color, motion, and contrast. It's interesting to look at and draws the eye. You've also (accidentally maybe) created a subject (the blue line) by placing it next to it's complimentary color... orange. This makes the eye follow it up and to the right. The use of another set of compliments (the red and green) almost seem to form an arrow towards the upper right, and that supports the eye's instinct to follow the blue line. The black nebulous on the bottom next to the orange keeps it from being too top heavy, and balances the piece without it getting to uniform... If the center circle were any other color but white, I wouldn't like this... However, it was an excellent choice, and it actually creates a foundation for the piece... Maybe you were kidding when you made this, but I would actually hang it on my wall if the lines were sharper... I don't like the rounded edges... It actually reminds me too much of a "computer program" and doesn't allow me to look purely at the form of the object. Fix that, and I'd like it quite a bit...

Fix that, and I'd like it quite a bit...WRONG!

It's a pony.

Not saying that Psi's stuff is great... Just that he ironically showed a knack for form, color, and movement...

"It's a pony"

Anyway, Picasso was freaking amazing... I figured you guys would have more of a problem with Pollack and the more modern stuff. I like his stuff a lot too. Picasso and Dali's works were much more grounded. Typically they were based on real objects or landscapes, but distorted to make the picture also mean something on a social or political or even aesthetic level... Jackson Pollack was quite different. He was making art that (in his own mind) transcended "form" and used solely form, color, movement, line... He didn't bother giving us pictures.

Thanks guys for realizing that even though it may be shitty art to some it is still considered art.

That's a crappy interpretation, but hey, that's what art is for.

Seriously, though... A sailboat? Please. You've come very close to offending me to a great degree by demeaning my work like that.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but the definition proves that "what art is" is opinion based; therefore, anything can be considered art...especially because there's always at least 2 percent that will say it is art, 5 percent that will say it's only art to a specific percentage of people, 8 percent who will say that it's technically art, and 5 percent who will say that it's not art--the other 80 percent, of course, are up-in-the-air votes consisting of the followers of one of the groups already mentioned.

This reminds me of one of the best points brought up on the radio in KC... [QUOTE]You can not get 90% of Kansas City's population--much less the nation's--to agree on ANYTHING. If you were to ask everyone if the sky's blue, about 60% would say "yes", and the other 40% would say "no, it's actually clear and what we see is a reflection of gases created by the stars."

That is for the viewer to interpret.

Looks like the beack on "The Creep Show."

Remember that blob was killing the swimmers who'd come to the docks in the middle of the lake?

Throw in a couple of abstract trees and a sunset and looks like your art is actually abstract.

Isn't there a degree that actors can get in "performing arts".
