Chargers give Marty a contract extension

The Associated Press

San Diego Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer was rewarded for his surprisingly successful season.

He agreed Friday to a two-year contract extension with San Diego that runs through the 2007 season.

Schottenheimer has one year remaining on his original four-year deal, which he signed in January 2002 and paid him $2.5 million a season.

Terms of the extension weren't released.

Schottenheimer helped turn the Chargers from the NFL's worst team at 4-12 to the AFC West champions at 12-4 and won AP coach-of-the-year honors. San Diego made the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons.

The Chargers were upset by the New York Jets in the first round last Saturday, 20-17 in overtime. Schottenheimer's postseason record fell to 5-12 after his fifth straight playoff loss dating to 1993 with the Chiefs.

Schottenheimer, 61, is 24-24 in three seasons with the Chargers.

“The franchise took a giant step forward this past season,” he said in a statement. “This success is a product of every person in the organization pulling together in the same direction. I appreciate the opportunity to continue to build on what we've achieved together over the past three years.”

• NEW GM FOR PACKERS: Ted Thompson was hired to take over coach Mike Sherman's general-manager duties with the Green Bay Packers.

Thompson left his job as Seattle's vice president of football operations on the same day that Bob Whitsitt was fired by the Seahawks as president of football operations.

Thompson was given full authority over football operations, including the power to hire and fire the coach.

It's not clear whether Thompson will pursue a contract extension with Sherman, who has a year left on his deal, which was to pay him about $3 million for his dual roles.

Sherman's new titles are head coach and executive vice president.
