I had to go with Marv. I presume they're making the playoffs in the prime of their coaching, too.

Marv wins by default. Every other coach on that list is tainted.

Yeah, Marv is pristine.

Heh heh.

Marv got his team to 4 consecutive SBs. That's just short of incredible. It's also a helluva lot better than the Chiefs have done in my lifetime.

Well, Marv led 'em there, but couldn't complete the deal. Shades of the Shottenheimer syndrome...

True enough. But I think you know what I mean.

I wonder why the Bills never won any of those SB's. Lack of talent? Coaching? Bad breaks? Overmatched?

No, obviously not. They were absolutely destroyed a couple of them, once by the Cowboys, IIRC. The Norwood game was when the Giants scraped by.

That's right. Weren't they thrashed by the 49ers, as well? Their glory years coincided with my overseas tour's of duty, so it's all sorta patchy for me...

Me too. I watched the Bills/Giants Bowl in March of 91 in the middle of Kuwait.

They barely lost to the Giants, then got whipped by the Redskins team with Rypien and Byner, then got annihilated by the first Cowboys championship team, then lost a closer game to them the 2nd time around....

Looks like Dallas put it on 'em once and beat them soundly the next year. Prior to that, they played the Giants tight and Washington beat them by 13.

I swear that Chuck Knox and Marty are the same guy. Their career records and playoff records are remarkably similiar.

I've been talking about that for 2 years, and have been keeping a semi-close watch on Marty's career win total.
He only needs about 30 more wins to overtake Knox as the HC with the most career wins to have never made an appearence in the SB, or pre-SB league championship game.

I think that the Bills lost to the Giants because they were outcoached, to the 'Skins because they had too many distractions leading up to the game, and the Girls twice because they just weren't as good.

No, Marv had qualities that Marty doesn't have.

First and foremost was the play to win mentality that Marty is just too afraid to grasp.

Second is the abilty to learn from his mistakes.

And third was the ability to get his teams to go go into the next season, after those losses and play at a high level, something that not only is a trait that Marty lacks, but a lot of other coaches, as well.

If there's one coach that never won a SB that belongs in the SB, it's Marv Levy.

Those 4 consecutive appearences after losses is really quite a remarkable accomplishment, and a teastament to his ability to learn, and to motivate.

I know for a fact that this is a lie. That Super Bowl was played in Tampa, Florida, and it was played in January.

Bud Grant gets no love? I suppose he shouldn't be mentioned since he couldn't win a single SB in 4 tries even with Tarkenton, Kapp, and the Purple People Eaters.
