PED = Pedestrian

Xing = means "crossing"

Because that is a Christian symbol, and it might offend people. I don't know. :shrug:

Slow children ahead
As a child, there was a sign across the street from my house that said "SLOW CHILDREN AT PLAY".

True story.

so why the "X" and not a cross?

If you put a cross it would like a t. Ped-ting. Then people might think it was a petting spot or something? :hmmm:

If Xmas = Christmas, wouldn't that make the sign read "Pedophile Christing"?

(Insert Catholic Priest joke here...)

Remember the railroad crossing signs: RXR ?

X has a long standing meaing in traffic signs to mean crossing.
