Since the wind came up to over 100km/62mph this morning, and the ferry to the mainland didn’t run
I had a chance to watch one of my favorite programs on the history channel.
“Wings of Discovery”
And low and behold, they had an hour long special on my absolute favorite plane
The F86 Saber jet:

various different modles of a Saber:

Why I love this plane I don’t know, sure there are many others “now” that could take it out of the sky without even trying, but man I love that plane.

Yeah the MiG 15 was a carbon copy (well kinda, they sure do look the same)
http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/air_power/ap42.htm
maybe it was because it was developed by the “dreaded communists” but the MiG just doesn’t have the appeal of the F86

Is there by chance anyone here who’s ever flown one?
I saw one at a museum once, took about 25 pic’s.

I built a ton of models from about age 7 to age 13, about one a week, mostly airplanes. The BEST kit I ever built was an F-86, by a Japanese company (might've been Hasegawa). It was about a foot long and had incredible details -- rubber tires, retractable gear, movable control surfaces, removable gun panels and an engine you could slide out.

About 5-10 years ago I got the hankering to build some models again and went to a hobby shop. Not only was I floored by the prices -- decent kits cost $25-30 -- but I noticed that most were static models, with few goodies like movable control surfaces, etc, which I remember to be quite common in the '70s.

I used to build models ALL the time as a kid..hell 3-4 a week.
Back then I though $7.00 was high!

I did a few Saber Jets but most were muscle cars like Barracudas, Challangers, Corvetts, Boss Mustangs and the like.

I even went all out and really detailed them too. Using worn out guitar strings for emergency brake cables, thread and a jewlers drill for drilling out the distributer caps and heads for the plug wires etc.
The last few I’ve built were of the Class 8 trucks I used to own.
I have dioramas of my
85’ Kenworth pulling a Tank trailer
87’ Freightliner haulin a Cat dozer on a “low boy”
90’ Freightliner pulling a reefer
92’ Peterbuilt hauling a flat deck with a load of lumber (I made the lumber out of balsa wood)
93’ Freightliner hauling a double drop detachable with an oversized load of Industrial roof top air conditioners including the escort car, and functioning revolving revolving lights on the cab of the truck.(This one was my pride and joy, which on the highway I called her “The Old Girl”)
and my last truck,,a 99” Peterbuilt hauling a Reefer.

All of them are mounted on a depicted scene of the trucks climbing a mountain pass just about to enter a tunnel in various stages of passing each other up the mountain.

It takes me about a year these days to:
A) Get the time to find the model I want
B) Detail it to the nutz
C) Paint it EXACTLY like the trucks I owned, down to the door lettering (a friend of mine is an air brush artist)

I’ll put about $100 into a truck and trailer combination, then what ever it takes to hand fabricate the “load” on top of the trailer if I can’t find a model of a piece of equipment I like.

Finding the time to do it these days is the really hard part.

Never flown one, but I did see one fly at an airshow in California in the early 80s.

Beautiful plane. Arguably the last of the true "gunfighter" fighters.

They said on tv,,,in a close up dog fight,(stright gun's, NO missles) an F-14 would have a "hard" time with one,,,but then again, the Saber wouldn't get within visual sight of an F-14 to begin with in the real world..
Pound for pound it was the best dog fighter of the eairly jet class ever built.

I was in Korea in 1968. The Koreans were flying the F-86's. Our unit had F-100's. I like the F-100 much better. It looked better and was supersonic.

what is the f-14's targeting range? Like 150 nm's? i rememeber playing a flight sim online, everyone would be the f-22 and i would grab a f-14 stay way the hell away, lock on to 5 seperate targets and fire away with the phoniex. It was the pilot version of camping i suppose

If you are referring to the range of the Phoenix, it's about 100 miles.

No, I don't. I was hoping you'd find some. They are known as "Super Sabres". You might try googling that.

I don't like the snub nose of the 86 and they look like a toy sitting next to an F-100.
