I'm starting to do satellite dishes that require a laptop to commission them. It has to have an ethernet port and at least Windows 98 Second edition. It will spend most of its time in the van and won't be used for anything else. Where do I get a really cheap one?

That's easy...

Get a gun (or replica), ski mask, & mean voice.
Hang out at your nearest corporate headquarters around 11am and I'm sure you can come across one for free in a matter of minutes.

eBay has a ton...

Check with places that lease laptops and then sell refurbished. But, places like Dell and IBM are still kinda high with those units.

eBay is likely your best bet, but buyer beware with that place... I'm sure there is someone on here that is either a master at eBay or sells laptops online.

What is your $ range...

I'm leery of buying electronic stuff on ebay. I've bought 3 fax machines and 2 printers there and 4 of them had something wrong with them. That, coupled with the fact I'm computer illiterate make it very risky. I really don't have a price range, I want the cheapest one I can find.

A co-worker here had his stolen from his house, if you can find it I'm sure you could get it pretty cheap. Just don't activate the wireless high speed card, they will find you...

Computers are a bit more cut and dry than printers. They have much less that can go wrong with them, and i'm sure if you had a problem with it people on here can help you.

I would buy from Ebay. Just make sure you are buying from a reputable dealer. Also, the problem with older laptops (the ones that will run 200-300) is most of them don't come with integrated ethernet. Some of them include an add-on card, but I prefer the integrated one better.

Also, many of these older laptops will include the original battery, which probably doesn't hold much of a charge. Unless it comes with a new(er) battery, you will probably end up having to buy a new one off the bat. Just make absolutely sure that the laptop comes with the power cable.

Also, try and stick with the name brands. IMO IBM makes a good laptop (can't say much for their desktops...), as does Toshiba and Compaq. You'll find alot of those older ones on ebay.

Hey Skip
I might have just what you need but you would have to get a ethernet card for it. Its a HewlettPackard Omnibook, it has Windows 98 on it, CD Rom, and I think is a 333mghz.
