View Full Version : U.S. students say press freedoms go too far

WASHINGTON - The way many high school students see it, government censorship of newspapers may not be a bad thing, and flag burning is hardly protected free speech.

It turns out the First Amendment is a second-rate issue to many of those nearing their own adult independence, according to a study of high school attitudes released Monday. The original amendment to the Constitution is the cornerstone of the way of life in the United States, promising citizens the freedoms of religion, speech, press and assembly.

Yet, when told of the exact text of the First Amendment, more than one in three high school students said it goes "too far" in the rights it guarantees. Only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories.

"These results are not only disturbing; they are dangerous," said Hodding Carter III, president of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which sponsored the $1 million study. "Ignorance about the basics of this free society is a danger to our nation's future." The students are even more restrictive in their views than their elders, the study says.

When asked whether people should be allowed to express unpopular views, 97 percent of teachers and 99 percent of school principals said yes. Only 83 percent of students did. The results reflected indifference, with almost three in four students saying they took the First Amendment for granted or didn't know how they felt about it. It was also clear that many students do not understand what is protected by the bedrock of the Bill of Rights.

Three in four students said flag burning is illegal. It's not.

About half the students said the government can restrict any indecent material on the Internet. It can't.

"Schools don't do enough to teach the First Amendment. Students often don't know the rights it protects," Linda Puntney, executive director of the Journalism Education Association, said in the report.

"This all comes at a time when there is decreasing passion for much of anything. And, you have to be passionate about the First Amendment." The partners in the project, including organizations of newspaper editors and radio and television news directors, share a clear advocacy for First Amendment issues.

Federal and state officials, meanwhile, have bemoaned a lack of knowledge of U.S. civics and history among young people. Sen. Robert Byrd (news (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/DailyNews/politics/news/ap/ap_on_re_us/students_first_amendment/14151541/*http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?fr=news-storylinks&p=%22Sen.%20Robert%20Byrd%22&c=&n=20&yn=c&c=news&cs=nw), bio (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/capadv/bio/SIG=117tm1v4u/ap/ap_on_re_us/students_first_amendment/14151541/*http://yahoo.capwiz.com/y/bio/?id=622), voting record (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/capadv/vote/SIG=11g39t4f5/ap/ap_on_re_us/students_first_amendment/14151541/*http://yahoo.capwiz.com/y/bio/keyvotes/?id=622)), D-W.Va., has even pushed through a mandate that schools must teach about the Constitution on Sept. 17, the date it was signed in 1787.

The survey, conducted by researchers at the University of Connecticut, is billed as the largest of its kind. More than 100,000 students, nearly 8,000 teachers and more than 500 administrators at 544 public and private high schools took part in early 2004.

The study suggests that students embrace First Amendment freedoms if they are taught about them and given a chance to practice them, but schools don't make the matter a priority. Students who take part in school media activities, such as a student newspapers or TV production, are much more likely to support expression of unpopular views, for example.

About nine in 10 principals said it is important for all students to learn some journalism skills, but most administrators say a lack of money limits their media offerings. More than one in five schools offer no student media opportunities; of the high schools that do not offer student newspapers, 40 percent have eliminated them in the last five years.

"The last 15 years have not been a golden era for student media," said Warren Watson, director of the J-Ideas project at Ball State University in Indiana. "Programs are under siege or dying from neglect. Many students do not get the opportunity to practice our basic freedoms."

Bullshit. These kids are too apathetic to care what's on the news channels. Whatever their notions are, they got them from MTV and PS2.

Tell me of one instance where Fox news has weighed to misinform on these issues.

Lattimer,
I tried to have the same discussion with DC a few days ago. My point was that thre are sites dedicated to that kind of thing and he should respect that this is not one of those sites. DC came back with the oh-so-lame "how is this different than what Big Daddy does?"
Uh, well, let's see here...BD's posts are chicks, DC's posts are dicks. BD's pics are appealing, DC's pics are revolting.

Quit ignoring reality. There is a very real difference between gay and hetero sexuality as portrayed by images, video, etc.
Hetero males have a very different reaction to images of attractive women than images of gay (male) sex or gay men looking gay.
Some people have consumed the PC kool-aid (about half my class in grad-school) and so won't tell you what they really think. That doesn't make the truth any different. If you want to/need to/ have to be gay then be gay but don't beat people over the head with your lifestyle and accept that the graphic part of it is best shared among others of like practice.

I never understood why most school programs teach civics in 8th grade and never revisit the "rights and responsibilities" of citizenship as students approach voting age. We need to do a better job at teaching kids to become useful members of our society.

I think most of us probably have the avatar ignored or simply tolorate it. I don't think there's any getting around the fact that most people likely find it distasteful.

In fact, I would be interested to see you run a poll on it. Say something like:

"What do you think of my avatar?"
-I like it and applaud your use of it
-I think it's distasteful but I tolorate it
-I think it's distasteful and want it changed
-I think it's distasteful and have your avatar ignored

I would think they were a couple of fags wrapped in the flag. You need to be sensitive to how far you push stuff like this on people. History shows that there are severe consequences for those who blatantly push the gay agenda on the wrong person(s). Not that you have anything to worry about on the internet but I hope you are more careful about this stuff when you are out in the real world.

1) I sometimes view CP from work - where a screen full of mostly text and a red layout theme might seem ok, but a screen full of images (many graphic in content) would not.

2) My workplace also uses a black list to prevent access to forbidden internet sites and report the accessor. Someone linking a pic in a thread that comes from a forbidden site would land me in hotwater (and potentially put the planet on the black list).

3) I have kids who come into the office at home and see what I'm doing on my computer.

Now, if I could have my session settings dictated by a client side cookie so that I get images at home and not at work I might be tempted to try my luck with #3, but 1 and 2 pretty much rule out the use of sigs or avatars.

It's a subjective opinion, not something that can be categorically tested and measured. However, we can measure how many people share this opinion and see if it is a consensus opinion.

I would think they were a couple of fags wrapped in the flag. You need to be sensitive to how far you push stuff like this on people. History shows that there are severe consequences for those who blatantly push the gay agenda on the wrong person(s). Not that you have anything to worry about on the internet but I hope you are more careful about this stuff when you are out in the real world.Oh good lord man...I don't wear my sexuality on my sleeve in public...this is a place to come let our extreme sides hang out...if you can't deal with that then find another spot....and I could care less what anyone in the real world has to say to me....they wanna come talk to 5'10'' 200 lbs of solid rockness about my sexual orientation then lettem...I bet you wouldn't mind me wearing my pink triangle while pullin you out from underneath a pack of crazy lesbians who go tired of your ca ca mouth

If you care enough to comment then have the intestinal fortitude to make a statement instead of sticking your tongue out at me from behind a fence. Bring your facts big boy; let's see what you have.

You're getting worried about DC pushing a gay agenda. How's he pushing any agenda? You're feeling pressured by some little picture? A little picture and you've lost it?

Furthermore, and I just want to say this in general about a common issue with the whole gay marriage. Anti gay people cry about the "Sanctity" of marriage. And what's the divorce rate again? Oh yeah that's right...

If you want to further the gay agenda go to a gay website.

Please don't misunderstand my point. There is absolutely no reason DC should not be allowed to put up his avatar. That would be wrong and hateful. DC's sexual practices make me ill but I defend his right to chase hairy man butt so long as it's between consenting adults.
Equal to DC's right to his avatar is my right to voice objection to his choice to subject a non-homosexually oriented web site to gay material. There are web sites dedicated to that sort of thing and, if you go there, you know what you are getting into.
Summary: I don't ask that DC rights be violated by his not being allowed to have an avatar that follows the same rules as everyone else's; I asked DC to consider, of his own free will, not putting up a blatantly gay avatar on a web site not designated as homosexual.

I tend to agree. I could care less if two guys want to hump each other, but I do think that 1) DC is stirring the shit with his avatar or 2) continuing with the apparent homosexual agenda of trying to "normalize" or "equalize" homosexuality with heterosexuality. Perhaps both.
