View Full Version : Rare 80's movies on DVD

The Bad Guy

I'm sick so I was bored as hell tonight. Anyway, I'm watching ESPN at about 2 AM and I see a Circuit City commerical and I know the guy talking is from somewhere.

It bothered the hell out of me for an hour.

Until it dawned on me - it's Buddy from the great, great, great 80's movie Just One of the Guys.

Since I'm a member of Blockbuster Online, I decide to do a search to see if it's available for vhs rental.

Much to my surprise, it's out on DVD. I can't believe they made this movie on DVD and I never knew about it.

If you haven't seen it, run out and rent it.

So I thought, if this dvd is available what other great, but not extremely popular 80's movies are also available?

Much to my dispair, Monster Squad, Over the Top and License to Drive aren't on DVD yet.

I thought this would make a good late night topic to pass the time and to find out some of the true 80's gems that were forgotten that are available today.

Over The Top is great...

Is One Of The Guys the movie where the chick dresses up as a guy for a journalism project and rips off the tux and the end of the night and you see her tits?

Some weird movies I would like to see again...
Howard The Duck
The Wizard
Berry Gordy's Last Dragon
Weird Science
The movie where Matthew Broddrick is in the Air Foirce and he trains the chimps in the flight simulators

Yes, that's the exact movie.

Damn, Last Dragon is awesome too. Bruce Lee-roy kicked ass.

Howard the Duck was great. I always thought Leah Thompson was majorly hot.

How about From the Hip or Hiding Out...

From the Hip is Judd Nelson/Elizabeth Perkins -- Nelson plays a fledgling lawyer who gets in over his head with a murder case where they dude's obviously guilty...

Hiding Out -- Jon Cryer plays a stock broker who is a witness in a murder and when his protectors get killed, he runs and hides out as a high school student with his cousin.

Also, check out Plain Clothes, where Arliss Howard plays a detective who goes undercover in a high school.

Little bit of trivia, Arliss Howard from Plain Clothes was born in Independence.

I can’t remember the name of the movie but here’s the basic plot.

School needs cash, so the fundraiser chick starts betting on “Dillon” who owns a sweet 68’ Malibu.
He keeps wining, and everyone in school starts getting greedy.
They need 100 grand to stay open so chick makes a bet with the “Fat Man”, who still holds a grudge against the principle (the guy who played with Clint Eastwood in the Every which way but lose movies) over a juke box he lost way back when in the “Twin Cities “ run.
He pulls out all the stops, and Dillion loses the race.
So he goes to Fat man and makes a deal double or nothing if he loses he works for Fat man.
They blow up Dillon’s car, so “Fast Freddy” the principle takes a walk out on the football field, digs up his old 57’ Chevy he hid under a barn many years earlier before the school bought the field and made the school over it., and Dillon wins the race…
Great flick, I just wish I could remember what it was called.

Heheh, Just One of the Guys ... when "Boys Don't Cry" came out and Hilary Swank got all the pub, all I could think about was "Eh, I saw that same movie back in the 80s ... except the chick didn't get murdered in the end."

hahah...great thread. I saw last weekend there was another lost 80's classic on the Sc-Fi channel. "Night of the Comet" Basically about 2 Valley girls who fight off zombies in a post apocolyptic future....hahaha...Had not seen that one in awhile. A few more that I love:

"Valley Girl": With a very young Nicolas Cage

"Fast Times at Ridgemont High": Sean Penn should have won the Oscar in a perfect world

"Bad Boys" Another Sean Penn classic about boys in jail

"Taps" A very young Tom Cruise and yes, Sean Penn again about cadets who take over their school to keep it from closing.

"The Outsiders" Im sure everyone has seen this one. Its got pretty much every big name 80's actor in it. Cruise, Swayze, Dillon, Lowe, Estevez etc....

"Losin it" young Tom Cruise again, with 3 other dudes who try and lose their virginity in Tiajuna

"All the Right Moves" and "Risky Business" Tom Cruise classics...

and basically any John Cusack movie from "The Sure Thing" to "Say Anything"

God, I could go on forever......

Linda Fiorentino's first movie Vision Quest

The one 80's movie that I have to get on DVD though is At Close Range.I can't say enough good about this movie, Christopher Walken and Sean Penn are A+ in this based on a true story,a must see.

There are a couple of 80s movies that I look for on DVD from time to time. One is I Come In Peace, starring Dolph Lundgren, about a cop chasing an alien drug dealer. Silly premise, I know, but the movie is actually pretty damned good. The other is My Chauffer, starring Deborah Foreman and Sam Jones, about a wild party girl hired into a stuffy limo service for mysterious reasons.

And speaking of Jones, I ought to pick up Flash Gordon. Cheesy as hell, but entertaining.

Is there a scene in My Chauffer where someone is fending off thieves by swinging a poodle on the end of a leash?

I love Flash Gordon too Fraz! One of my favorite guilty pleasure movies..loved it as a kid. "I come in Peace" actually came out in 1990, so technically its not 80's....LOL It is however a pretty decent flick. IM also waiting for "Ishtar" to come out on DVD. Ill defend that movie to my grave. I think its hilarious and much better than its reputation.

Vision Quest was great. I was telling a guy at work today about that movie, but I couldnt remember the name.
Does anyone remember a movie called "Streets of Fire". That is one of my faves from the 80s. It was a rock and roll musical.

"Streets of Fire" was a fantastic movie. Michael Pare, William DaFoe, and of course, a young and stunning Diane Lane.

"Rustler's Rhapsody" was a hilarious spoof of the old singing cowboy movies; staring Tom Beringer (sp?).

Don't forget "Spaceballs" either.

Both were really great family movies. I also liked Legend. My problem with older movies is that I really don't know/care when they were made so there may be a lot of 80's movies that I really liked but don't know that's when they came out.

I agree that Legend was a good movie. Dark Crystal and the neverending story were also cool. I forget the title of that one movie where the kid gets abducted on that cool starship that can go back in time and there is all those wierd creatures on the ship. That one was great.

Ah yes Gelfling! It was Flight of the Navigator IIRC and PeeWee Herman was the voice of the space ship. Another one I liked along the same lines was Labyrinth with David Bowie.

I'd love to find the opening music to that movie when he's riding on the subway.I bought the soundtrack back in the 80's but it wasn't there.I know Ry Cooder did some of the music,if anyone knows what that piece it is please give a head's up.

Its a moral imperative to not regard "Real Genius" as one of the best comedies of the 80's!!! Classic stuff!

http://home.att.net/~scst/images/rg8.jpg

So, if there's anything I can do for you, or, more to the point, to you, you just let me know.

Susan: Can you hammer a six-inch spike through a board with your penis?

Chris Knight: Not right now.

Susan: A girl's gotta have her standards.

Bwahahaha! Ah the classics!

Chris Knight: Don't eat that. Eating that can cause very large breasts. Oh my God, I'm too late.

Chris Knight: This? This is ice. This is what happens to water when it gets too cold. This? This is Kent. This is what happens to people when they get too sexually frustrated.

"I come in peace"
"You go in pieces, asshole"

I liked that movie a lot as well so don't feel bad. That came out close to the first Punisher starring Dolph Lundgren and Lou Gossett Jr.

I was always a sucker for the horrible straight-to-video horror movies. Here's a list off the top of my head:

Blood Diner
My Bloody Valentine
Class of Nuke 'em High (from the makers of Toxic Avenger)
Basket Case
Sleepaway Camp
Silent Night Deadly Night
All of the Puppet Master movies
From Beyond
