That looked really good. Then again, so did some of the previous ones.

I'm impressed that he's having an Emperor/Yoda face off. I figured that wouldn't happen. The Yoda/Duuku (sp?) face off was worth the price of admission on the last movie alone (the last 45 or so minutes saved the last one).

Let's hope Lucas doesn't continue to screw the pooch on this. This new series has been stunningly disappointing.

Senator Palpatine is not known to have control of the force. The Jedis can sense those who do control the force, usually. I am sure that Yoda is surprised when he finds the dark master has been right in front of him all along.

Agree completely.

The first one shouldn't have even been made...the second one was just kind of a paint-by-numbers from one FX sequence to the next. Hopefully Lucas will make this one well enough that we can just pretend the previous two don't exist.

Following are the plot summaries from IMDb and a list of reasons (compiled by me) why these movies suck

I: Plot Outline: Two Jedi knights and an outcast must help a queen save her world, and along the way discover a boy who has the potential to be a powerful Jedi himself.

Stuff that sucked:
*all the court nonsense
*the lengthy, pointless, improbable and really gay pod race
*quick death of Qui Gon (or whatever his name was)
*quick death of Darth Maul
*JarJar Binks
*Anakin (age 6?) teaching himself to fly and blowing up whatever that was at the end
*No heroes or even likeable characters are developed. Why not keep Qui Gon alive and develop his character? Why not develop any of the various jedis into likeable characters? Why not keep Darth Maul alive as a recurring threat? Why bore me with all of that beaurocratic court crap? Why have a 20 minute pod race and why have such a cheesy finish to the race? Ok, I understand that Lucas wanted to emphasize that the force was strong in Anakin but, really, that last sequence was gayer than Christmas and not even remotely believable.

II: Plot Outline: Anakin Skywalker shares a forbidden romance with Padmé Amidala even while his teacher's investigation of a separatist assassination attempt leads to the discovery of a secret Republican clone army.

Stuff that sucked:
*melodramatic death of Anakin’s mom
*Anakin’s incessant whining
*quick death of Jango Fett
*boring separatist movement crap
*still no heroes or development of likeable characters (the film centers on Anakin and it is annoying). Two movies and I still have no reason to care about any of the Jedis. Where are the heroes in this epic? Why bore me with the separatist movement crap? Why not develop Jango Fett a bit before killing him? As it is, I couldn't care less about him. Whining, whining and more whining... Whining is not epic. The death of Anakin's mother was predictable, overly melodramatic and really lame.

These movies are like chicks with big, fake boobs and no personality. All flash and no substance. There is absolutely no mystique, no magic and no reason to care about any of these two-dimensional characters.

You mean the Senate? All that is vital for Palpatine's character, sorry.

The pod race is necessary. How else are they going to get off Tatooine? It also gives meaning to the line "when I first met him, your father was already a great pilot."

Quick death? He lasted the whole movie.

No arguments on Maul. Waste of a character.

Ugh. Should have stuck with 3P0 and R2 for comic relief.

Eh. Star Wars IS melodrama. I liked that scene.

Intentional. Luke was a whiny bitch, too. "But I was going into tosche station to pick up some power converteeeers!"

Again, Jango lasts the whole movie. But it would have been nice to see his character in III.

Separatist stuff is essential to the plot. Can't have a war without the separatists. Sidious can't get his clone army without a war. Sidious can't form an empire without his army.

Your last point is extremely valid. We already know what's going to happen to all these characters, so it's a bit lame. Bad acting doesn't help.

I wonder if I would feel differently had I not seen IV-VI.

I'm sorry but that senate crap is boring. Pare it down or just do something different altogether. Seriously, wouldn't you rather see you supervillain doing something more heinous than manipulating beaurocracy?

How are they going to get off of Tatooine? Any of eleventy billion ways. I would imagine that Kyle or Rausch could write something more imaginative and less cheesy in less than 20 minutes.

Yes, Qui Gon was a quick death. He died before anyone has a chance to give a crap about him.

The death of Anakin's mom was soooo lame. Again, there are people here on Chiefsplanet who could write something more imaginative and less cheesy.

Luke was a bit of a bitch in the first half of the first movie but he had heroes and likable characters around him. I don't see that in these new movies. I am supposed to like the jedis but their development has been so sparse that I don't. I don't care about any of them.

All of the pretense of the buildup to war could be taken out of the plot and replaced with a single scene in which the audience and the characters are both let in on the secret. Something along the lines of the emperor just introducing his allies would suffice. Good guys "You'll never be able to get away with this" Emperor "Oh, I think we can" (introducing his up-till-this-point secret allies).

The bad is acting is much more forgivable than the bad plot and bad dialogue, IMO. Actually, it is partly a result of the bad dialogue.

No need at all to develop Jango, after all we know where Boba Fette comes from, and that’s all that’s important in later episodes, not to mention setting the "son seeks dad's revenge" tone for Boba later in life..

Same for Qui Gon, ok, we know who taught Obi wan who in turn takes Aniken under his wing. No need for much more on Qui.

Darth Maul, if kept alive, then the “Dark Emperior” already has a Sith Lord at his disposal, thus the “need” for Vader would be less important as it is.
And besides even though Vader has stronger “force” powers than Darth, he’d still be the “other” sith lord. No way Maul would have taken a back seat.

In order for Aniken to “turn to hate” we had to know what triggered it, his mom’s death did. Otherwise we’d have been sitting there wondering why the hell be goes bad.

I guess we will agree to disagree.

Palpatine's not your average supervillian. His work is supposed to be all that behind the scenes stuff. How else is he supposed to gain control of an Empire? Take on every Jedi by himself?

The only way to get off tatooine was to win that pod race. They had no money!

Your point about Qui-Gon is still bullshit. Obi-Wan died quicker in Episode IV.

In 3 when Qui buy's it, he at least bleeds to death and shows a bit of pain. Obi wan just goes "poof" and is no more.

IMO they should have made Maul the "Vader" of the prequel trilogy, with Vader eventually killing him off and taking his place (which is what happens with Dooku of course).

However, Lucas does have a neat thing going with the three "sub-villains" of the prequel trilogy. If you think about it Maul (the fighter) + Dooku (the schemer) + General Grievous (a robot) = Vader. Pretty neat, IMO.

Vader is the ultimate apprentice.

I don't mind either of their deaths in either movie.

Alec Guiness argued that Obi-Wan needed to be killed off in the first movie and at the precise right time. Lucas wanted him to live, but then he looked at the script and realized that after the Death Star escape, Obi-Wan pretty much has nothing to do but just stand around.

Actually, it is partly a result of the bad dialogue.

I think that's the biggest problem, apart from Lucas' shitty direction. There were others involved in the original trilogy. Now lucas wants to do it all himself.

They did hire dialogue coaches for the last movie, though.

*On Jango Fett and Qui Gon: These two characters present an opportunity to develop characters that the audience cares about (in movies that are sorely lacking in this area) To me, it is a wasted opportunity to kill off potentially interesting characters before developing them.

*On Darth Maul: Maybe the Emperor grooms Vader even though he has Darth Maul? Mabye they have to fight each other for the right to be the Emperor's favorite? There are eleventy billion possibilities that could have incorporated Darth Maul further in the stories. Again, it is a waste of a potentially interesting character.

*On Anakin's turn to the darkside: While I recognize the need to have an event that makes Anakin go nutty I just find this part of the story unimanginative and lame. It is one of the most trite and least creative reasons Lucas could have used.

They aren't going to show the Jedi purge and the rise of the whole Empire. There are thousands of Jedi, and an Empire takes a long time to set up.

My guess is they will show the Jedi purge and the Empire's glory years in the TV series they are planning.

As for how many loose ends he'll tie up with ep. 3...who knows.

1. stupidest part of the whole thing was the stupid Jedi Genetic Aptitude Test (mitochloriants or whatever). Just unbelievably bad. Stunningly bad.

2. Jar Jar. Ugh. :shake:

3. The "we need this scene for the impending video game". At least one in each movie. Just dumb, no explanation for them, random action scenes.

4. I had no problem with the whole Emperor rises to power by manipulating the bureaucracy thing. I don't know how you steal an empire by just going on a Clint Eastwood rampage or whatever. Wouldn't work. Although not exciting, you get the sense that Sidious rises to become Emperor by being a master minipulator, who fools even the entire Jedi Council and Yoda.

5. Annoying, whiny Anakin Skywalker.

6. Inability to develop a sympathetic hero figure as a central character. Instead, Anakin is the central figure, and he's completely unlikeable even before he goes over to the dark side.

Agreed on all. Especially the mitachlorians (sp) thing -- as bad as making Greedo shoot first. Completely destroys the appealing mysticism of the Force as presented in the first movies (esp. the New Hope). It's a bunch of nanobots or platelets, not some ethereal, God-like power? Feh.

I also agree with what Jonah Goldberg wrote last week on NRO Corner:

IF GEORGE LUCAS WERE TIED UP IN MY BASEMENT... [Jonah Goldberg]

I'd run down stairs, take away his gruel, and hit him with a bag of oranges again.

The Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith trailer will premiere during Fox's O.C. on March 10.

The reason this bugs me is simple. It's just another reminder that someone convinced George Lucas and his entourage that the Star Wars movies were always intended for kids. In fact, I'm kind of surprised they aren't showing the trailer on Spongebob Squarepants.

If Lucas had made these new films grown-up movies that were accessible for kids, rather than kids movies which appealed to the nostalgia of grown-ups, he would have remained one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. He's still laughing his way to the bank, but the movies have become something of an embarrassment. I truly don't understand why this is so hard to grasp. The Incredibles was more oriented toward adults than Phantom Menace was. I know I've said this a million times, but the key to the original Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back was that they took themselves seriously. They didn't apologize for being sci-fi. If the audience thought sci-fi was stupid, that was on them. The worst thing about the new Star Wars films -- besides from being at times abysmally written generally ("I hate sand" indeed) -- is that they constantly wink at the audience; "we don't take ourselves that seriously."

And that is the genious of Palpatine. Even in the original trilogy, he does almost no fighting. He sits back and lets others do the dirty work. He's like my second or third favorite character after all this juicy PT stuff...Ian McDiarmid is the one actor who's been consistently good IMO.

Bugs Over Bullets
The assassination attempts on Amidala continue. Putting a bomb in her ship didn't seem to do the trick so these unknown assassins start to get a little more creative. Amidala's bedroom is protected by laser motion detectors all across the floor while these giant windows remain unguarded. The assassins decide to fly a droid over that will spread a part of the window open (how I'm not sure) and release poisonous bugs that can crawl underneath the lasers and bite the Senator. They opt for this method rather than sending the same droid over with a gun to just shoot her with bullets which would also not trip the lasers and would be foolproof. Instead they send living beings to sneak past Jedi who are masters of the Force, a mystical power created by life. Dumbasses.

Great. This is just another reason to mention "spice miners" and is never mentioned again. A perfect example of George Lucas going down the Star Wars checklist on his way to making a poor film. "Gundarks?" Check. "Spice Miners?" Check. "Poodoo?" Check.

Reason #8
Jedispeak
"We're trying to protect you, not start an investigation." Why are Jedi always talking like this? Jedi have gone from being just about the coolest thing I can imagine to being know-it-all jerks. Everything anyone says in presence of a Jedi they must be cautious of. If you say anything around a Jedi they'll just change it around. "Master Yoda, we're out of Pop Tarts." "Oooh? So certain are you? Always the Pop Tarts can not be found." "But I looked in the cupboard and it's empty." "Empty the cupboard is not. Absent of food it is. As 'empty' the same it is not." ROFL
