Chiefs | Deal Reached with Surtain; Must Now Deal with Dolphins - from www.KFFL.com
Fri, 1 Apr 2005 07:01:28 -0800

Alex Marvez and Ethan Skolnick, of the Sun-Sentinel, report the Kansas City Chiefs and CB Patrick Surtain have agreed in principle on a multi-year contract extension, which includes an eight-digit signing bonus. However, the Chiefs now have to work out a trade with the Miami Dolphins to acquire him. The Chiefs are reportedly offering a fourth-round pick, while the Dolphins are looking for a selection in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft. Dolphins head coach Nick Saban said the team will not compromise when it comes to their asking price for him.

I don't think so. I thought the Dolphins gave Surtain permission to seek a trade a while back. It seems like it would be more difficult to reach the player contract agreement than the the trade agreement, so it only makes sense to let teams figure out if they can even afford him before they start worrying about actually making the trade.

To be honest, I don't really think this means anything. So we've agreed on a contract...Great. However, the Fins can choose what type of compensation is right for them, and if the Fins don't like Peterson's offer, then they won't trade Surtain.

I don't know how some don't consider this a good thing. If he has agreed in principle, all we have to do is give Miami compensation and he is ours. The article even states they are willing to accept a 3rd rounder. Like I said, several times now, trade down with our 2nd rounder and give them a low 2nd rounder or 3rd rounder, depending on where we trade down. We already know they want a 2nd or 3rd rounder and they are willing to let him go. It's not like we don't know what the compensation is. I know it's popular to bag on Carl(I know, I know I've don't it alot myself), but believe it or not, this isn't his first dance.

What I was implying is there is alot of skeptisism on us landing Surtain and that is why I said some don't see this as a good thing. Should have worded it better, but there definitely is alot of skeptisism about this getting done and I see the biggest hurdle over with. I see it as just a matter of time, before he is ours. He agreed to become a Chief. Now we just haggle with the fins and come to an agreement. That's the easy part.

it would screw it up

if the phins won't allow a physical before the actual trade then it's possible that they could use our (traded) draft pick and then have to give us a draft pick back ... next year i would assume.

i don't know if we would have the option of taking the player they selected WITH that pick or not.

would be a cluster f*ck

might be why we are seeing some movement now ... because they want to get surtain in for a physical before the draft so that we will get it back in time to use it, if something should go wrong.

You're right, I never thought of the conditional trade thing. It does happen.

It doesn't have to be a cluster ****. The Dolphins and Carl would just have to negotiate a deal that includes a contigency plan if he doesn't pass a physical.

ya... but there's not much a contigency plan could do about our 2nd round draft pick that the dolphins would already have used by the time Surtain fails the physical.

potientially the dolphins could have our 2nd round pick AND surtain for this year.

just lose their 2nd round pick next year, while jacking us around.

Yes, there's little chance the contingency plan would address the issue this year.

But it doesn't have to be one-sided.

For instance, we could do a Wellbourn-type deal where we get their FIRST next year if anything goes wrong.

Don't be a Jackass Carl give up the 2nd, you will only waste it anyway.Jim, I really respect your takes on the board, however I'm confused as to why you want Carl to just give up the farm for Surtain, when we could likely improve the situation by trading down in the 2nd and land additional picks plus gain Surtain in a trade. I'm all for Surtain, but you have to admit we are better served if we can pull off landing Surtain and be getting a pick/s back. We have a great 2nd round pick this year and the draft is supposed to have great value well into the 2nd round. I think the FO is playing their cards right.

I take some solice in knowing that we have known what the asking price was for Surtain and we still negotiated a new contract that he has AGREED to. Don't fret, we'll get Surtain.

Maybe since Miami wants a top 3 rounder, KC is looking to get a 3rd rounder and something for their 2nd and then use that for Surtain.

Try and get Surtain without giving up the 2nd round pick. However give it up if you have too. Surtain is more valuable than anything we are going to draft in the 2nd round.

That name is funny on a number of levels. I mean... a brewpub, named "Rock Bottom"? I wonder how many people in AA hit "rock bottom" at Rock Bottom.

It just doesn't seem like a name you'd want to associate with an establishment whose focus is alcohol sales.

:bravo:

Exactly. TRY to get him for less. If it doesn't happen, go ahead and give them the 2nd.

I honestly don't think Miami will take anything less than a 2nd. We should trade down to recoup picks and give them a pick at the END of the 2nd...

The answer is simple, Carl is not capable of successfully pulling off what you desire. He will likely blow this deal by trying to do something he thinks is smart and he will waste the 2nd round pick on someone who could have been drafted in the 4th round anyway. Someone who will by history never pan out.

You are talking a relatively young multiyear Pro Bowl CB for a 2nd rounder. On almost any team I would say that was a good deal. For Carl I would say it was a complete steal. Carl getting a steal is about as rare as things happen.

Take the deal Carl.

We should try and trade them our 2nd and 4th round picks for Surtain and their 3rd. They pick at the beginning of the round, it's almost like a 2nd rounder.
