Impressive outing.

It wasn't too bad, and he had control trouble early on at the game (bases loaded twice in the 3rd inning, only to give up just 1 run.)

So a good performance, considering he hasn't pitched since 2003.

He hasn't pitched since last weekend. Most of the other guys pitched yesterday. If there's a save situation Thursday, Affeldt could still pitch. Chances are, with this team, there won't be a save situation again on Friday. And if by chance there is, he'll throw Mac out there.

If it is close, you'd prefer to stick a stone-cold Affeldt out there to save it? A stone-cold Affeldt gave up a run today -- a run that could cost them in a save situation. This was a perfect situation for him to get some work in, to get ready for when the game IS close.

Why leave Wood in? You're gonna sit Affeldt until a save situation arises? What if it takes another week for that to happen?

That said, the thing I'm most excited about is Elvis is back in the building! :)

Seriously, if he can come back strong, him, Greinke, and Bautista could form quite a strong trio. We've got Greinke going tomorrow, let's win this series and knock down some of those Tiger fans who thought their team was heading for glory after Monday.

Damned if ya do.......

I just don't think using your closer in a 7-1 game makes sense.
That's what mop-up guys are for. I realize that's unchartered waters for Pena, but I've never liked the way he handled his pitchers.

It's too bad he decided to throw Sisco to the lions on opening day. This would have been a nice low pressure situation to get his feet wet.

I'd rather have Affeldt come in with the game on the line, pumped full of adreneline, than finishing up a laugher.

Bottom line though, a very good win, and I'm happy.

Noticed that we were 0-2 in SB attempts. Although I am pretty sure Allard Baird is a Moneyball disciple now, I don't think Pena is. I shudder to think how many innings he is going to run us out it, and how many games he is going to cost us with his incompetence.
