This kid is one of the reasons I am going to follow the Royals for a while this year. After reading a few stories about the kid he intrigues me.
A total nut job that has pitching knowledge beyond his years, at least that’s what the critiques claim.

Would love to, but I'm off for school early today.

I have to agree with whoever said Zack is a nutcase. I think a lot of it has to do with being a 20-year-old kid from Florida. He's got great stuff and when he's on, it's great to watch. Had tickets last year when he got his first win at home. Besides opening day and the Cardinals/Yankees series, that was the most electric the ballpark had been all year.

Well, I can do a batter PBP. You can get a example of how by this thread. Of course, that was my first time, so I was a bit rusty.

They've got a good lineup. I think they were 5th in homers last year, too. Detroit could win the division with some luck.

But, the guy he's facing today had an ERA over 5 last year so hopefully we can plate some runs early. It would be nice for Greinke to get up early so he can cruise.

I'm not sold on their starting pitching yet. Even more so after what Maroth did against our shitty lineup yesterday.

Yea I know they're better. They made dramatic improvement last season. I'll still believe they're really good when I see it.

This is one year when the KCR pitching will be much better than the hitting. Strangely enough, I think our starters are actually pretty decent. The hitting..................well, we'll be near the bottom in runs scored, yet again. We just don't have enough pop or speed in the lineup to put any sort of fear into the opposing teams pitchers.

This is true, unless they can play "small ball" at it's finest, then they might have a chance. I just know that that Royals are not really a "power" hitting team, but they still can do the little things like yesterday as a good example. If for some reason, the Royals are hanging around in the weak AL Central and within striking distance of the lead, then I would think that they might trade one of their pitchers for a bat. But that's just my speculation.

I think if Brian Anderson pitches anything like he did during the very latter part of last year and through spring training, he'll be gone by the All-Star Break.

Just accept the fact that in MLB only the large market teams (with big payrolls) will win the World Series.
You may get a smaller market team who will actually makes it to the World Series (see St. Louis last year), but they won’t win it.
The pennant is bought and paid for before the season starts.

Projected Winner this year.
NY Yankees $205.9 million
Boston $121.3 million
N.Y. Mets $104.8 million

With this in mind the most fans of the smaller markets can hope for is a divisional title. If you can live with that have a fun season, if not find another summer sport (MLS is a nice option).

Well, one has to wonder if Marrero's D is better than Sweeney, Pickering, and Stairs?

It's gotta be better than Pick's, and probably Sweeney's, and maybe he doesn't want to put Stairs at 1B unless it's an emergency, wanting him to stay "comfortable" in the OF. But as much as we're gonna struggle for runs this year, I think we need to get our best bats in all the time. Marrero is a platoon hitter, and his D isn't SO good that he's a great asset at 1B. I mean, if you're not gonna play Stairs and Pick against RHP, why have them on the team?

Well I have heard that he hits well aganist righties than lefties, but I can't confirm that. I would probably have to check out his career stats between R and L's for that matter.

Another option the reason why I think they keep him around is that he play multiple positions I guess. tk13 probably would give you a better answer than I would as of this moment.

No, Marrero is a much better hitter against lefties. And Pick and Stairs kill righties.

I looked up Johnson's splits, and lefties and righties hit him about equally, so it's not like he's one of those rare reverse-platoon guys.

Ah, thank you for looking it up and correcting me then. I guess I was wrong. Just for some reason I thought he performed better aganist righties than leftys, but that's not the case. Hmm.... then I have no idea why Pena is having him start over the other guys as far as I'm concered.

He was trying not to overtrain in the spring this year since he was going to throw more innings than he ever has in his life. He said that so far this spring he was not trying to dial it up as much but that the velocity would show up a little later.

Grienke CAN get it up into the mid 90's, but he loses movement when he does so. He's best when topping out in the low 90's, because his fastball really dances there.

So I read.

Greinke is a video game pitcher. Not in the sense that he can throw crazy loopy pitches (well actually he does that too), but whatever your thinking of pitching on the PS2, you do it on command. Greinke can do the same, only he has a speed dial he can fine-tune.

Getting ahead of them, and that the Royals are hitting weak-ass rolling groundouts.

And Long is thrown out. Stupid decision to run him. :shake: Especially when the Batter walked. Could have been runners on 2nd and first with on outs unfortunately. But that's not the case.

Without reading through the whole thread - this may have been covered elsewhere....BUT..

Why in the hell is Eli Marerro playing 2 days in a row batting cleanup? And if we're just sitting Pickering to play Marerro - why did we keep him instead of Harvey? I know Pickering has HR'd in his last 3 games, but I'm not sure if that makes up for his utter lack of being able to make contact with the ball on a better than 10% clip.

But basically, Pickering/Harvey - I don't really care which one....but Eli Marerro 2 days in a row and cleanup at that? Terrible.

Just another reason Pena should be gone. Two years ago, that guy did the goofiest things and it worked out somehow - the last 2 years, the ballclub has performed more on par with how Tony Pena manages.

If Sweeney can't play first, we need to get Harv up here quickly and get Pickering down here. We can't afford the luxury of being able to play Pickering at DH if we can't rely on Sweeney to play 1st. Any combo of Sweeney/Pick/Harvey beats any combo that includes Marerro.

Yeah... negative is positive. If it's positive, it's negative. You want negative, that's positive, but not positive, that's negative. You wouldn't think negative, except when you want negative, because if you think positive, it's negative. I'm positive.

It's short for 1/3rd. It's easier to type that than 2 1/3 or 2.3333333333333333333333333333333333333 all the time.

Greinke bruised, KC battered in series-ending loss to Detroit

By BOB DUTTON The Kansas City Star

DETROIT — First things first.

Royals wonderkid Zack Greinke apparently suffered nothing more than a bruise on his right forearm after getting drilled by a line drive that forced him to leave Thursday's game against the Detroit Tigers in the third inning.

As for the game … it was close until the Royals' defense collapsed in a six-run seventh that cemented a 7-3 loss at Comerica Park.

Greinke departed the game in the third inning after being struck near his elbow by a liner off the bat of Carlos Guillen. The ball caromed toward third, which allowed Guillen to reach safely with a one-out single.

“I didn't even see it,” Greinke said. “He hit it pretty good, but that's the first time I've ever been hit hard by one of those ever in my life.”

Greinke tested his arm by making a few practice pitches before exiting as a precaution.

“I felt like a girl coming out of there,” Greinke said, “especially since I still didn't feel any pain later on. Maybe I could have pitched through it.”

The Royals, of course, were taking no chances with their prize prodigy and hustled Greinke off for X-rays. Plans call for him to make his next scheduled start, though he will be re-evaluated today.

“Three inches higher,” general manager Allard Baird said, “and it would have been his elbow, or 7 inches lower and it would have been his wrist. So it could have been a lot worse.”

Mechelle Voepel is going to be SO pissed at him.
