The Seahawks beat out the Bengals and Jaguars to reach a five-year, $17.5 million agreement to sign former Texans linebacker Jamie Sharper, considered one of the best players still available.

Sharper, who will get a $1.5 million signing bonus, visited the Seahawks last Thursday and Friday but left without a deal and was in serious discussions with the Bengals. When he was with the Ravens as defensive coordinator, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis coached Sharper. In the end, Sharper decided the money and opportunity to play in Seattle were the best.

For the Seahawks, Sharper is expected to play strong-side linebacker even though he also has the ability to help them at middle. There are plenty of openings at linebacker. Outside linebacker Anthony Simmons was released. Middle linebacker Orlando Huff signed a four-year deal with the Cardinals. The Seahawks are asking outside linebacker Chad Brown to take a $3.2 million pay cut from his $4.2 million salary, and if he doesn't accept he may also be cut.

The 30-year-old Sharper has never missed a game since coming into the NFL with the Ravens in 1997. He's had four consecutive 100-plus tackle seasons and has 831 total tackles during his nine-year NFL career. He spent the past three seasons with the Texans.

That is pretty cheap. 1.5 million dollar signing bonus? I wish we would have had him in for a look.

Simmons = injury prone and attitude problem.

Sharper = never misses a game and no attitude problem.

Sharper can play the middle and outside and has not missed a game in his last 100.. Simmons has missed about 60 of his last 100..

I just don't get it.
Why is that the Chiefs have no interest in him now?

What has changed over the last couple of years?

I'm not on the DJ bandwagon, but imagine for yourself if we had signed Sharper, and drafted DJ.

Jumpin' Jesus, did Seattle get the steal of free agency. Congrats to Joe Seahawk. I am dumbfounded that they got him for so cheap. Christ almighty there is no excuse for the Chiefs not to have brought him into Arrowhead and made an offer. The money that went to Hall and Holcomb could have went to Sharper and went a hell of a lot farther. It's tough to be a Chiefs fan at times like these.

I'm starting to think Simmons might come back to Seattle if he doesn't get an offer soon.. He'd probably just as soon sign back here if the money is the same..

It's a good deal, but I believe he's a 4 mil cap hit this year..

ESPN.com reported Sharper's deal at five years, $17.5 million, with $1.5 million to sign on the way to $4 million in the first year in what probably amounts to a two-year deal for the 30-year-old.

I agree. But compare Sharper to Fuj, Maz, Barber, Caver, Fox, Scanlon, and I'd rather have Sharper... :hmmm:

Why doesn't this suprise me?

Carl had better get Surtain in soon.

I like the Bell and Knight signings, but if that is all we do in free agency, I will be pissed.

Its a Chiefs draft, we always expect the letdown. But I'm still on the DJ bandwagon.

Well then, won't it be exciting to find out which TEAM you'll be rooting for next season? :thumb:

so tell me again why we weren't interested in sharper ... it can't be because he was too expensive.
