The skinny
Last November Kansas City-area voters struck down a sales tax proposal that would have provided badly needed stadium renovation funds for the Royals and football's Kansas City Chiefs. Had it passed, the one-quarter-cent sales tax was expected to raise $1.2 billion and contribute $15 million for renovations for Kauffman Stadium, home of the Royals, and $50 million for renovations for the Arrowhead Stadium, where the Chiefs play. The improvements would have generated badly needed revenue for the small-market Royals, whose paltry TV deal and antiquated ballpark forces the team to have one of the league's smallest budgets.
