I get to work a little late, and I have to check out some Virtual PC Images. I walk around looking for an empty classroom. One room warrants further investigation... but no, there's a small, two person class. Sign says "Excel Level 4", a rather advanced course on macro programming, use of advanced functions, data tables and the like. I recognize one of the students.

Derrick Alexander.

For me, a rather cool moment. He grabs a cup of coffee and I introduce myself.

I know some of the folks here feel he let us down a bit, but hey, I just shook his hand. I'm having a pretty good day.

Our operations manager wants to go by the class door and throw a football at him. See if he catches it.

Live in Lawrence, work in Leawood, on State Line. Why - you driving up with a deer rifle?

Nope, I don't have a deer rifle. I was trying to figure out why DA was in Lawrence. I guess he wasn't.

My wife used to work for his insurance agent, they all said he was a really nice guy. Same thing with Green, just a nice guy.

I know as far as on the field is concerned, he wasn't always the most popular guy, but for off-the-field stuff, he was always a favorite. He's gone through more heartache than many of us ever will.

I'm shocked. I always got the perception he was kind of a dumb guy.
