Westbound lanes of Interstate 10 near Chandler re-opened about 9:45 a.m. after being closed for more than five hours following a violent collision that left an unidentified driver of an SUV burned beyond recognition, authorities said.
Witnesses told police a small SUV was driving eastbound on I-10 at about 85 mph with no lights on when it lost control and crashed into the median about 4:30 a.m., said Officer Frank Valenzuela, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.
The SUV, a Kia Sportage, then began to roll and went over the top of the median cables into westbound traffic, where it collided with an 18-wheeler. The accident happened just south of the Wild Horse Pass Boulevard overpass near Firebird Lake, Valenzuela said.

"Both vehicles burst into flames, and the wreckage traveled for 200 yards before coming to a stop," he said.
The driver of the Kia has not been identified by the DPS.
The 18-wheeler's 57-year-old driver, Jose Marquez, and his 63-year-old passenger, Victor Castro, were not injured.
"They were able to escape in time before the fire consumed the vehicle," Valenzuela said.
Westbound traffic on I-10 was diverted onto eastbound Queen Creek Road, then sent north on Price Road, where drivers could connect to a section of the Loop 202.
