Chad Brown expected to visit Steelers today

Batch, Haynes sign new contracts; Chad Scott joins Patriots
Wednesday, April 27, 2005

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Chad Brown is on his way in, Chad Scott is officially out and Charlie Batch and Verron Haynes are back on the Steelers' roster.

Batch, who missed all last season with a knee injury, re-signed with the Steelers yesterday for one year at $540,000 and a $25,000 signing bonus. Batch, a former starting quarterback with Detroit, has been a backup with the Steelers since 2002 and became an unrestricted free agent in March.

He joins Ben Roethlisberger, Tommy Maddox and Brian St. Pierre on their roster and likely will compete against St. Pierre for the No. 3 job. Batch is rehabilitating from knee surgery last summer and is not ready to work out with the Steelers, who will have their minicamp May 6-8.

Brown, 35, who left the Steelers in 1997 to join Seattle as a free agent, was released by the Seahawks last week after he turned down their request to accept a $1 million contract this year. He visited the New England Patriots the past two days and is expected to visit the Steelers today. It's considered remote they would sign their former starting linebacker.

Scott found a new home in New England. The Steelers' longtime starting cornerback, released in February, signed a one-year deal with the Patriots. Scott, 30, the team's first-round draft pick in 1997, lost his starting job because of an injury last season.

The Steelers also announced that Haynes, a backup halfback, had signed a one-year contract. He had been a restricted free agent until that period ended a week before the draft. He will earn $656,000 this year.

Eh, I'm not that gung ho about a 35 year old LB with injury problems who rejects a million offer. He did well in Seattle and it sounds like he wants to go home. This will probably bite me in the ass later this season but I would rather one of our younger guys be the back up OLB, Key, Fuji, Boomer, whoever.
