White Sox can set major league record Tuesday

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago White Sox can set the record for consecutive games with a lead to start the season Tuesday when they open a three-game series with the Kansas City Royals.

The White Sox have held the lead in all 25 of their games this season, tying the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers for the longest season-opening streak in major league history.

Chicago matched that mark Sunday, posting an 8-0 victory in the rubber game of their three-game series with the Detroit Tigers. Timo Perez and Carl Everett drove in three runs apiece and Jon Garland tossed his second consecutive shutout for the White Sox, who lead the majors with 18 wins.

Mark Buehrle (3-1, 3.89 ERA) will get the start in the series opener, looking to bounce back from a shaky performance. The lefthander was hammered for seven runs and 11 hits in six innings last Tuesday, but did not figure in the decision in a 9-7 loss to the Oakland Athletics.

Buehrle has lasted at least six innings in his last 33 starts, the longest streak since Curt Schilling reeled off 39 straight starts of at least six innings from 2001-03.

Buehrle will be opposed by lefthander Brian Anderson (1-2, 7.54), who is winless in his last three starts. Anderson took the loss in his last start, allowing six runs and six hits in six innings last Wednesday in a 9-4 setback to Minnesota.

After dropping the opener of their 12-game road trip, the Royals won consecutive games for the first time this season, taking the final two games of their series with the Cleveland Indians. Mike Sweeney's second homer of the game broke an eighth-inning tie Sunday as Kansas City recorded a 6-5 win on Sunday.
