Onterrio Smith Suspended For Season

May 19, 2005 12:44 pm US/Central
(WCCO) The National Football league has suspended Minnesota Vikings running back Onterrio Smith for a year.

The reason for Smith's suspension was not immediately released. He will miss all of the 2005 football season.

Smith, 24, rushed for 579 yards as a rookie and led the Vikings last season with 544 yards.

Smith spent part of the 2004 season on the bench, serving a four game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. In the summer of 2004, Smith tested positive for marijuana.

At the time, Smith was in the league’s substance-abuse program for at least one other previous positive test.

In April 2005, Smith was detained at the Minneapolis/ St. Paul International Airport with a device called “The Original Whizzinator.” Smith reportedly told police the device is used “for making a clean urine test.”

To me, I think this is a further indicator that Warfield is not going to get suspended by the league this year.

If he was going to, I think the Chiefs would have heard by now.

Just my opinion.....

I'd fully expect a legal challenge over this. Unless there is another 'true' violation we have not yet heard about, the possession of the Whiz was not a violation, at least to the letter of the law. Sounds like the NFL feels they can withstand the legal case, and slip this into the CBA.

I would have to think that since Smith is a previous offender, once the league heard about him packing a Whizzinator, they prolly had a someone on his front porch with a specimen cup the next morning.

No connection to the wizzinator. ESPN Radio reporting that he failed to show up for his piss test. Guess he figured it was not worth the effort.
