Lake disappears, baffling villagers Thu May 19, 1:15 PM ET

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian village was left baffled Thursday after its lake disappeared overnight.

NTV television showed pictures of a giant muddy hole bathed in summer sun, while fishermen from the village of Bolotnikovo looked on disconsolately.

"It is very dangerous. If a person had been in this disaster, he would have had almost no chance of survival. The trees flew downwards, under the ground," said Dmitry Zaitsev, a local Emergencies Ministry official interviewed by the channel.

Officials in Nizhegorodskaya region, on the Volga river east of Moscow, said water in the lake might have been sucked down into an underground water-course or cave system, but some villagers had more sinister explanations.

"I am thinking, well, America has finally got to us," said one old woman, as she sat on the ground outside her house.

That happened to my Koi pond once. 1,800 gallons of water simply gone overnight.

Saw video of a HUGE lake get sucked down into underground cave system. It was some scary shit... a MASSIVE whirlpool with swirling vortexes surrounding. Didn't take much time at all for a multi-acre lake to be gone.

Did you see any giant, shifty-eyed camels earlier that day?

It was aliens. They needed the water to power thier hydrogen-powered spaceships.

No. But I did see a rather bloated squirrel the next day. Damn dry out here, as you know.

While disappearing lakes is an amazing thing, I'm also drawn to two observations from this short article:

1. That bitch actually believes we give a s**t about her turd little lake and have the means to move an enormous number of of tanker trucks through her villiage in one night to steal their water. Although it's kind of plausible when you consider that Russia is the only source of water in the world.

2. The reporter couldn't find anything more intelligent to put in an article that short.

You're thinking way too low-tech. What we do is pump a high-energy microwave down from a satellite. We boil the water away, it turns into clouds, floats over to drought-stricken areas of the U.S., and then turns into rain. Voila! A Russian lake becomes and American lake.

There was a lake, I believe in Florida or GA a year or two ago...that had a sinkhole open up under, that drained the lake.

Its a geologic event, but it has happend before.

Off topic, but one of my neighbors has (had) a koi pond, and some raccoon keeps coming and stealing the koi. The guy has seen the raccoon, but can't stop it. Now he's just got a pond.

Heh. Came with the house. It's now filled with three cubic yards of dirt (that was fun) and covered with grass.

Japanese carp. Really colorful. Our's got to the point where they would feed out of our hands.

Taking care of a pond, however, just plain sucks.

True. I do think that Asian gals, particularly Japanese, have the the most wonderful nipple color.
