Noted sci-fi author Philip K. Dick will make an appearance at this year's WIRED magazine's NextFest in robotic form, thanks in part to the University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology. Together with Hanson Robotics, the Automation and Robotics Research Institute of the University of Texas at Arlington and other project supporters, the University's Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) created this "android-portrait" of the late author whose stories became the motion pictures Blade Runner, Minority Report, Total Recall and A Scanner Darkly (a major feature film to be released in 2006).

The IIS contributed the technology that will make the Philip K. Dick robot listen, understand and respond to someone talking to it or asking it a question. Through projects like AutoTutor and the Intelligent Distribution Agent (IDA) developed for the U.S. Navy, the IIS has become world-renowned for its work developing computer agents that respond to human conversation and commands.

NextFest will be held at Chicago's Navy Pier June 25-27. For more information on the NextFest visit http://www.nextfest.net. To learn more about the Phillip K. Dick robot and to read the project blog, please visit http://www.pkdandroid.com.
