View Full Version : Pat Kirwan: Denver may have greatness in Maurice Clarett?

Kirwan writes this about MC.

I was speaking with a member of the Denver Broncos when I asked him for an update on Maurice Clarett. What he told me was enlightening, and possibly another example of the Broncos' ability to pick running backs.

Maurice Clarett is showing he might have the instincts to be a productive running back.

Clarett was described as a guy who could really read a zone scheme and a guy with maybe the best hands of the Broncos' backs. "Really read the zone scheme" means Clarett makes very fast, excellent decisions when he gets the ball and can stress a defense's weak spot.

As this Bronco said, Clarett might have run a slow 40-yard dash, but he ran right past one of the fastest linebackers in the NFL the other day at practice. He went on to say Clarett's vision and ability to read makes the 40 time irrelevant. Is it possible the Broncos have done it again with a non-first-round running back?

Leverage is what every good business searches for, and the NFL is no different than any Fortune 500 company. The Detroit Lions leveraged return specialist Eddie Drummond with the signing of R.W. McQuarters, and the Chiefs grabbed WR Az-Zahir Hakim to offset Johnnie Morton's departure. The beat goes on

Personally I think things will be different once MC gets hit full on by some of the BEST in the NFL and we'll see how well he does then.

Of course what Shanahan needs is a big play back who can score anywhere on the field, its his only way his offense has ever worked. MC is not going to be thier savior even though he will probably put up some decent numbers.

What do you mean "have to?" We pick up a runningback every year regardless of need.

He means that they all defect because they are tired of looking at and listening to plummber being the *uck-knob that he is on a daily basis... thus Denver HAS TO pick up more running backs every year.

Plummber is Denvers problem and everyone that is a Broncos Fan is in denial about the WHOLE damn thing!

Gee, I learn something everyday. I thought speed was one of things that was kind of important in a running back.

But now we find out that speed is irrelevant. ROFL

You have to admit that Clarett was a top running back as a freshman on a national championship team. He's proven he can play on a high level, no matter what the stopwatch says.

You ate too many paint chips as a kid...

Portis and Droughns were traded... they didn't exactly defect.

It's a slow month, the writers have to find something... Bell is still the guy slated to be the starter, so I'll worry about Mo at another date.

Saying the "40 time" is irrelevant is not the same as saying "speed" is irrelevant. I can't recall the exact number, but Terrell Davis had a mediocre combine 40 time and I recall that he kicked some ass now and then. I think that was more the point behind the comment.

Better watch out... Rosenhaus is gonna be pissed as you're not giving him the credit he deserves. I don't think it's a chance occurrence that Portis and Droughns hired Rosenhaus, demanded big money and were traded.

I have to admit that Denver seems to draft mediocre running backs and make them great ...

then they want more $ and are shown the door because Denver seems to be able to do this year in and year out.

Like hell they do. Easy to look decent at mini camps. When the real deal starts he will look like he is. A slow, can't get to hole fast enough bum.

Donnel Bennet looked great in mini camps but what happened when the real shiat started? He looked like what he really was.

The predjudice against this kid won't hold up. I'll read it now and chuckle. In KC he might have been a bust. Luckily, he's playing for a team that knows how to develop runningbacks.

So it's the the Bronco's version of how the Chiefs always draft/sign 5 safeties a year?...

Taco John
06-16-2005, 02:00 AM
Well, not exactly. We end up with things like extra draft picks and thousand yard backs when we do it.

For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would spend any energy doubting the Broncos ability when it comes to runningbacks... DBs? Absolutely... Doubt away... But runningbacks?

Denver's track record for RBs is pretty good, so we'll have to wait and see on Clarett (the fastest turtle in the world). Really, 40 times really don't matter. Someone stated that it does, especially in a RB. Well, Anquan Bolden didn't have a very good 40 time. IIRC, his was like 4.7. A guy by the name of Emmitt Smith was supposedly too short and too slow, as well.

Best of luck to the Broncos that Maurice is a bust though. Hopefully, for our sake.

Taco,
Sure prejudice against him will hold up much the same way as it has with your kind for Kennison.

You asked how anyone could doubt the cheating Donx when it comes to RB's? It's easy, they like you, are full of themselves. That causes one to overlook the obvious...

Wonder how great he'll be, or any other Donx RB for that matter, with more cheap shot blocking tactics being banned? :hmmm:

The System = Hold - Chop & Crack Back - if that fails, break out the Vasoline...
