NEW YORK -- Three weeks after being defeated by Carrie Underwood in the finals of "American Idol," Bo Bice says he's happy he lost.

"People ask me, 'What were you thinking while you stood there waiting for them to announce the winner?'" Bice says in the issue of Rolling Stone magazine on newsstands Friday.

The answer?

"Please, God, don't let me win this thing."

Bice claims he never wanted the Idol crown to tarnish his Southern rock rep.

"The label 'American Idol' was not for me. I'm not a pop person. It would have been harder to play my kind of music if I had won," says the 29-year-old Alabama native.

In the May 25 finale, the long-haired rocker failed to bring in as many votes as Underwood, who won over audiences with her country charm. But runners-up on the Fox show have done well in the past most notably Clay Aiken.

This fall, Bice will record an album with producer Clive Davis, due out by year's end. He hopes to persuade Davis to include a few of his own tunes.

"I would rather put out an album of my own songs, and if it flops, it flops."

After all, Bice feels like he's playing with house money at this point.

"I just came in (to 'American Idol') being myself," he says. "And for some crazy reason, that's what people were wanting. Which is why I am truly the guy who's the most freaked out about everything that's happened."

Yeah, getting roped into that Idol contract pretty much screws you.

This show is truly genious. Whoever wins the thing gets a record contract, and American Idol and Fox no doubt gets tons of cash for it. Whoever loses in the final rounds also seems to cash in.

On average, 8 of the 12 finalists from each season got a record deal.

It was my understanding, however, that only the winner got a Davis contract that dictated to them what would be recorded...apparently, I was wrong.

Davis and the Idol people are cashing in on all of them, not just the winners.

I think the only guy of note that didn't get a contract last year was that amateurish hack Jon Peter Lewis. ROFL

I remember that Clay Aiken had to go to court in order to not have to pay Simon so much of his money.

Unfortunately he won, and now I have to hear the "If I was Invisable" song 13 times a day as KUDL plays in the background at work.

Between him, Kelly Clarkson, and Tim McGraw "live like you are dieing", they play each one of those songs every hour of the day.

If you win they own you. If you finish like in the top 10 they own you. They parade your ass all over the country singing the worst songs ever made for the Idol tour thing.

Were it not for AI, Bo Bice would be flipping burgers between his garage band gigs. Talk about biting the hand that fed you.

I'd say Kelly Clarkson eventually survived it. What does she have--like three top 10 hits in the last six months.

It took changing her image and losing her baby fat, though.

Do you even know why he tried out for the show?

Because his mom made a bet with him that he wouldn't try out.

And by the way, the winner isn't pop. But the contract she "won" specifies that she will sing AT LEAST one full album of pop songs.

By all means, bash away. But try to know what you're talking about.
