Sac fly from Thomas. Gotay should had let Brown catch that, since Brown's momentum was going forward towards home-plate.

But then again, not sure if Brown would had that.

I don't like the Jensen kid. He can't pitch an inning without letting a run score. The homerun he gave up to Dye and the runners he allowed on in the subsequent inning have basically cost us the game. I fI had to make a knock on Bell right now it was bringing him in and leaving him in.

That was not exactly an inspiring effort last night. Jose Lima has to officially be the worst starting pitcher in all of baseball with at least ten starts this year. His ERA rose to 7.82 tonight and it only figures to get worse. If he stays on schedule his next start will be at Coors Field, Lima may as well just turn on the mound and throw the ball over the fence. The only problem with cutting Lima is his replacement, which at the moment would be Jimmy Gobble. Even if you’re convinced Gobble can do better, that leaves two open spots in the bullpen after relievers Jeremy Affeldt and Ambiorix Burgos were placed on the DL today. The Royals need Denny Bautista to get back to 100%, and fast.

On the brighter side of things, even after losing three out of four, the Royals sit at 12-7 since Buddy Bell took over the reigns. At this pace they’ll finish with 84 wins, exactly twice the 42 they were on pace for before the Bell hire. Under Bell the Royals are still playing better baseball than they ever did without him. How much longer can this be attributed to the “new manager syndrome”? Well, perhaps the biggest test is just in front of them.

After finishing up with the White Sox, the Royals travel to Colorado and then face their toughest stretch since May. They’ll play seven against Minnesota and three each against the Mariners and Angels before the All Star Break. Continuing at their current pace would put the club at 37-50, and possibly within 10 games of the Wild Card leaders. Anything less will send them into complete “play for next year” mode, and will probably bring some trades.

Whether for lack of interest or value to the future of the franchise, these are the players that should be with the club through the end of the year:

Starters: We’ll start with the obvious here and name Zack Greinke, Denny Bautista, Runelvys Hernandez, and JP Howell as the untouchables of the staff. These four young guys have all shown flashes of brilliance and will remain cost efficient for the next few years. In other words, no way you can trade them. DJ Carrasco is in a different position. At 28, he’s a little too old to be developing into the starter he’s been for the last month. But he’s also too young for the Royals to give up with out getting something of considerable value. Either way, it seems improbable at best that Carrasco is anywhere but in KC after the deadline.

Bullpen: Obviously Rule 5 draftee Andrew Sisco and the 20 year old phenom Burgos are way too talented and way too young to even consider trading. Others such as Leo Nunez, Ryan Jensen, and Jimmy Gobble lack the big league credentials to even be considered as trade bait. One guy that is interesting is Mike Wood. Wood could draw some interest with his steady performance thus far this year, but as high as Royals management is on him, it’s hard to imagine that anyone values him as much as the Royals do.

Infield: I didn’t even want to address the Mike Sweeney deal, but for those of you that insist he should be traded I will. Sweeney is the ultimate catch-22. He’s either healthy and thus too productive to trade out of our inexperienced lineup or he’s injured and isn’t even worth his contract to prospective trade partners. Sweeney is going nowhere, and the same could be said for most of the rest of the Royals infield. Rookies Mark Teahan and Ruben Gotay are part of the future of this organization and are as untradeable as anyone right now. Two years ago, you’d have said the same for Angel Berroa, and with Andres Blanco’s recent switch to second base I’d say that hasn’t changed. The only other Royals starting infielder is catcher John Buck, and if for no other reason than the lack of organizational depth at catcher, Buck will stay put.

Outfield: In my opinion this is the shortest list of all. Obviously center fielder David DeJesus is a part of the Royals future, but I don’t know that anyone else is safe. It may seem strange that with the corner outfielder being the Royals #1 concern, that they may in fact trade one away, but consider this: If the Royals corner outfielders were part of the future, that wouldn’t be out #1 concern.

So, you may be thinking I left some of the most productive Royals off the list of untradeables, well there’s a reason for that. Unless this team keeps this pace up for the rest of the year, this year is lost as far as the standings go. So Tony Graffanino’s .300 batting average or Emil Brown’s warning track power aren’t going to win us anything. Hey, I like Matt Stairs as much as the next guy, but if we can get a prospect that even has a chance of being a contributor at the Major League level, Stairs can play somewhere else.

In the next month you won’t see a fire sale from General Manager Allard Baird (if only because we have no fire to sell) but you could see the Royals pick up the next Denny Bautista. Allard Baird will have to excel in these types of dealings if he wants to succeed here in Kansas City. Let’s hope we can trade one of these uncharacteristically hot bats for someone that can help us win when it matters.

FEARLESS FORECAST

Week of June 20-26: 3-3

Royals on the DL: Denny Bautista continues to rehab and I think we’ll see him sometime around the Seattle series July 4th through the 6th. Unfortunately, that may be the only help on the way. Affeldt should be back after 15 days which would put him about the same time. I think he’ll probably make it back on time but I doubt we’ll see Sweeney or Burgos before the All Star break.

The Royals sit at 11-7 for June with eight games left. They need to win three of their next eight to stay over .500 for the first month this year. I predict they’ll go 4-4 to finish at 15-11, surpassing their win totals from April and May combined.
