J.R. Giddens will transfer from Kansas University, head coach Bill Self announced Thursdsay.

Self, who stressed that this was a mutual decision and not a disciplinary action, said he and Giddens came to this conclusion around 8 p.m. Thursday night. He added that he didn't know where Giddens would be transfering.

Giddens, who averaged 10.1 points last year as a sophomore, was stabbed May 19 during a fight outside the Moon Bar.

"The last six weeks have been a difficult situation for all parties involved following the May 19 incident," Self said. "J.R. and I have both taken enough time to remove the emotion of the decision and come to the conclusion that a fresh start for both parties would be best. We certainly appreciate his efforts the last two years and wish him the best in the future."

Self, who mentioned the negativity brought to the program by the incident during Thursday's news conference, said no single factor led to the decision. Self also said that the results of the police investigation into the Moon Bar incident did not affect the decision for the transfer.

"Our decision was based solely on what was best for our program and J.R. at this time," he said.

"With everything that has transpired with this situation, coach and I are in total agreement that a fresh start would be best for Kansas and me," Giddens said in a statement. "I'm sorry for what has transpired. Regardless of guilt or innocence, I put our program and myself in a bad situation. That does not take away from the fact that I loved my time here. I appreciate the support my teammates, the coaching staff and fans have shown me."

Self said he notified the team of the decision around 9:30 p.m. or 10 p.m. Thursday night and they were caught off-guard by the announcement.

He added that this incident won't change any rules within the program.

"We don't need to do things differently," he said. "We just need to keep reinforcing what we do."

This whole thing has been a black cloud hanging over the KU program. I'm relieved that they decided to part ways. It's probably best for JR and for the team.

Have I mentioned how stupid you look when you throw around the term MUrons? It reminds of opposing fans referring the Chiefs as the Chefs or the Quiefs.

Calling that 'honorable' is about as homeristic as it gets.

I call BS on this being a mutual decision too. He put a stain on a storied program and they wanted him gone. Why would he have volunteered to pack up and leave, especially if he claimed he was innocent of any wrongdoing?

KU will be better off w/o him and his non-contact, no FT shooting arse.

He would've faced a ton of crap from the fans. They would never let that incident go away. I do believe that the KU program wanted him gone after this and how he really hasn't changed his attitude (heard that on the radio after the Bill Self interview). I think they would've given him a chance to change his ways but he didn't want to do that. And he has already taken a lot of flak from the fans for his poor performance late last season and then this incident. I believe that he wants a fresh start as much as KU does.

You fool. He committed seppuku after honorably protecting himself, and his seven stout companions, from a knife-wielding psychopath.

I agree. He gave J.R. the opportunity to slit his wrists and climb in the warm bath rather than require a hit from the family.

Funny thing though - Looks like all of KU's starters next year will be Self recruits. Moulaye is done, Hawkins isn't a starter, and Jeremy Case isn't either. Crazy to think that all of KU's starters next year will be either freshman or sophomores. Robinson/Kaun/Giles/Jackson/Downs/Wright/Chalmers...

He is so wise and noble to move on. So wise and noble that we may have to elevate him to the level of Scanlon. I mean, I'm sure when he gathered up 8 of his closest friends and walked out of a bar to Raiders-stomp a guy who had no chance, he was just thinking, if I were going to do the most wise and noble thing in the annals of jayhawk history, what would I do? I know, I'd take part in a gang beating and get myself tossed from the basketball squad millions of kids can only dream about playing on. That would be wise and noble of me. So wise and noble, I'll be wise-ing and noble-ing at San Jose State this fall. Damn he's wise. And noble.

It does indeed suck to have to stick with one team whatever the sport whether they are good or bad.

Good riddance.

I disagree about Roy's recruits not starting next year. I expect Hawkins to take one of the guard spots early on.

You guys are forgetting if he transfers he has to sit out a year. Unless he goes to a 1-AA or Div 2 school.

No such thing as a 1-AA school in basketball, Cornholer. :p

But..I can't blame ya, you're a Nebraska fan. Their basketball program is the definition of futility.

Take it from someone who knew Bill Self pretty well, Giddens must have had thirty or forty "strikes" for Slick Willie Self to run him off.

---

Let's put it this way, while resurrecting (pun intended) the ORU basketball program, Slick Willie used some tactics that would have made Beelzebub himself blush!
