They look like some kind of bears with human ears. How many darker-complected people are perfectly caucasian around their mouths and eyes?

Mexicans are like "no, no we love Speedy Gonzales"
Liberal freaks are like " no, you can't they are making fun of all Mexicans"
I guess I just don't understand the need to creat victims out of people who don't fell they are being victimized.
Why do you think the drawing is?
just because of the exaggerated ethnic features and the history of those exaggerations and how they were used.
jet black skin ... huge lips etc
doesn't mean the entire cartoon is, I've never seen it. but it does have a very "Aunt Jamima" ... "slappy" look to it.

Gotcha. I just assumed exaggerated features were par for the course in cartoon type drawings. I mean, look at Popeye.

I don't see anything rascist about it myself...

true ...
that's were the history of those exaggerations come into play. there were we quite a few films where the character with those exaggerated features were also were racially exaggerated. (bare foot, watermelon eating, stupid etc...)

I don't think you can say it's racist, simply because of the background behind it. If the intent of the cartoon isn't racist, then it simply isn't racist.
However, it is reminiscient of the old slavery cartoons that included exaggerated stereotypes.
Personally, I think there are probably more pressing issues that Jesse Jackson could direct his attention to, but I've always felt that Jackson was more about shaking his fist in the spotlight than actually advancing the causes of blacks.

Jorge Orta is an Afro-Mexican, I'd say that if he comes to town to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Royals World Series, he could decide the issue.
Scott McClellan. Now, that's funny.

I don't think it's racist. I think it's probably insensitive. But that's not illegal.
I think for something to be racist, an element of hate needs to be mixed in.

"In our country, the image of black people is one of enormous goodwill, which is reflected not only in characters like Memin Pinguin, but in popular songs ... like 'Little Black Watermelon,'" a song about an unruly black boy.

While I do not find the image to be racist, I do find it mildly entertaining watching one minority group call another minority group racist instead of picking on whitey.

Well........blacks and hispanics may be a minority group in the United States but hispanics are not a minority group in Mexico; they are the majority.
The real question, IMO, is whether or not the joke is demeaning. If it is, then it is inappropriate. But if it is poking fun in a light-hearted way, then it is harmless, IMHO.

Because the cartoon isn't directly pointed at me I have no idea if it's racist or not.
How did Papa Smurf get Smurfette pregnant?
He smucked her.
well, it's issue #91 so it can't be THAT racist...

Where do you see thick lips? I don't see any lips at all.

the entire white part around the mouth is all lips, i think.
they are so huge you just naturally thought they were cheek or something.
Those don't looke like lips to me.

OK I’ll take your word for it, since it’s been like 20 some years since I’ve seen that cartoon.

then why the big white area, by the mouth, on a jet black face?

I watched some of the really old Popeye cartoons and if you really listen you might figure out that the cartoon wasn't made for kids. Some of the muffled dialog was pretty dicey, especially for them days!!

What they fail to realize is that Speedy was always portrayed as the winner.
