after playing just about every and any FPS type game out there, i
keep hearing noise about America's Army (http://www.americasarmy.com/).

has anyone checked this out or tried it? is it any good (worth the
download and install) or is it lame?

i'm quite partial to unreal tournament and call of duty if you need a
base of comparison.

I tried playing it when it first came out. The graphics were bad ass back then, the gameplay was a little too slow and a little too realistic. All you could do back then was train with others - missions consisted of playing with the "beeping" guns in warehouses (army war games). Haven't played since then, but it's free so why not give it a try?

well i guess they just came out with version 2.4, and i was contemplating
the download/install to give it a try.

apparently, one must pass the "basic training" on the registration servers
before they allow you to go out and do multiplay with "live cyber ammo".
interesting concept, but i guess it's also a good way for n00bs to get a
feel for the action instead of getting frustrated with the new game and
the usual bunch of d!ckhead spawnkillers compounding the situation.

there are some pretty large manuals that go with the game. looks really
involved. if the game engine is THAT involved with unit tactics than it
may end up being pretty decent to play. might have that 'teamwork'
key that i find missing in pick up matches of Call of Duty...

I have played it. The graphics are unreal and it is very realistic. From what I understand they use the game to train the real Army.

do you like the way it plays?
what other FPS would you compare it to?

do you play often, or are you done with it?

I liked it but I didn't play it very much. I got busy doing other things. You should try it out though it is pretty good.
