My sister just dropped a glass of pop on my Dad's keyboard, what is the best way to clean it. It's acting funky........ the up / down keys are jumping and the pc is making noise.

Any help here, just try'n to help her before he gets home.

When did they start callin Babygravy "pop" in Kentucky?

In a brilliant move, in effort to keep RoyII from finding out that III spilled on his keyboard, showing innovation and an exemplary strategy employed by asking for the advice in a spot, he'll NEVER see it, I hearby nominate III for the Planet's Darwin of the Week award.

Put it in the dishwasher on the lowest setting with no soap. Be sure heated dry is off and you let it dry out completly before pluging it back in.

Or just pay the $10 and get a new one.

Logical
07-06-2005, 10:40 PM
Seriously the best thing to do is replace it. 10 to 15 dollars will buy a replacement. Pop and keyboards are a lethal mixture.

If you must attempt to clean it, unplug it, rinse with water, dump/shake it out thoroughly. Poor rubbing alcohol in it (rubbing alcohol is a drying agent for water). Shake it around thoroughly and then dump it out. You must let the keyboard dry out for a minimum of 24 hours then you can plug it back in and attempt to use it.

Uh. First. Take the keys off.

They sometimes take a little 'forcing.' I usually use a flathead screwdriver. Once the keys are off, it's ok to soak in water. Get the water extremely hot though, so it dilutes the sugar (other wise you'll just be getting it wet and the sugar won't come off).

Don't let it sit for too long though, or the motherboard will get soaked. As soon as you take it out, you need to dry it off immediately (but not just the outside. It's the motherboard that you need to get dry). It's best to use the oven (but not directly on the oven rack) a pizza stone or anything else that is non-sticky will do fine. Put in at 350 for no more than 5 minutes.

If you don't have a non-stick sheet or pizza stone, you can use the microwave, but you can't put it in for that long (duh) or it will melt. Two or three rounds of 1 minute a piece should get it nice and dry.

Now you just put the keys back on (kind of time consuming). Also, you can clean the keys while they are off by soaking them in a mixture of bleach and regular laundry soap. Just mix that up in the sink while you running the hot water over your keyboard...

Good luck, and PM me if you have any questions.

Good luck, and PM me if you have any questions.Uh I have my doubts about your microwave advise and your 350 degrees for 5 minutes, usually their is an extremely thin sheathing plactic layer in cheap keyboards that will melt and that would become brittle if microwaved. If it is a really top notch keyboard with solid state devices in it the microwave will fry the PNP or NPN gates in them.

I second that. Of course, what Logical has stated is true. I would just go with a optical mouse, along with a nice keyboard, since the optical mouse wouldn't really need major cleaning, compared to a rolling ball mouse.
