I've bought every Madden since the original, and definatly plan to pick up this one in a few more weeks. The graphics and game seem to get better every year. But, I agree, they need to pay a little more attantion to roster changes.

For those of you that play online, you can go there and update rosters there (at least you used to be able to). I gave up on online play after Madden 2004 due to all the bad sports and cheaters out there. They took all the fun out of the game.

I'm pretty sure they will update the rosters before they release the game, still have a little over a month to go. If they don't you can update the rosters over the internet (XBOX Live)

That's what I enjoy about the game, the franchise mode. It sucks to build a player and watch him leave for greener pastures. But, that's what makes the game so realistic.

What exactly is the point of the vision cone? It's not like you want your QB locking onto his target anyway. It would just telegraph his intentions to the defenders. Not to mention, unless you're capable of moving your QB's head, it's all moot anyway.

Count Zarth

What exactly is the point of the vision cone? It's not like you want your QB locking onto his target anyway. It would just telegraph his intentions to the defenders. Not to mention, unless you're capable of moving your QB's head, it's all moot anyway.

It's more realistic. Here's the rundown:

Each QB will have a cone of vision based on their awareness. QB's with high levels of awareness will have greater cones of vision. QB's with low levels of awareness will have a much narrower vision cone. Throws to players within your cone of vision will be more accurate. Throws to players outside of your cone of vision will be less accurate. Skill levels will also affect the vision cones. Vision cones will be wider on Rookie modes and tighter on All-Madden.

At the beginning of the play, your cone of vision will lock onto the play's primary receiver. You can use the R2 & L2 button pre-snap to change the default receiver. For example, if you read linebacker blitz and want to hit a quick slant pattern, you can lock onto that receiver before you snap the ball. This will duplicate the idea of a QB make his pre-snap read and looking for his 1st receiver.

After the snap, you can use your right analog stick to rotate your cone of vision to throw to receivers outside of your original view. With a QB like Manning or McNabb, this is fairly easy as their vision cone will cover a good part of the field. For a QB like Grossman or another guy with low awareness, this will prove to be very tricky. There is another option, however.

You can hit R2 and press the pass icon of the receiver you want to throw to. This will cause you lock onto that receiver no matter where he is on the field. That way you don't have to use the right stick to lock onto him. I know that if I am playing with a low awareness QB, I'll use this option a lot more than the right stick.

After the receivers have run their routes, they will go into "Get Open" mode. Their icons will disappear off the screen, so it will make it much harder to find a guy to throw to him. Hopefully this will stop the 20 yard drop and run around tactics that we have seen the last couple of years.

on't have to drop passing icons anymore to sprint. You just hit X (on PS2) to sprint. If you are sprinting, your cone of vision becomes even smaller. I like the thought behind this as it will make it harder to be accurate on the run.

On the precision side, you can use the left stick to adjust your throw location. Up on the stick as your throw, makes a high pass. Down makes a low pass and right and left obviously adjust the throw to either side. Now you can throw a high pass over the middle to clear those pesky linebackers. There will be some logic built into the game for hits on receivers with their backs to the defender which should even things out a bit here, otherwise we will have a whole new breed of rocket catching.

A couple of notes here from a defensive point of view. If you lock onto a receiver the whole time, the defense will get a SLIGHT awareness boost. This seeks to duplicate the idea of a QB staring down a receiver. You can also look off a receiver. Lock onto one receiver, switch your vision and make the throw. This will give the defense a SLIGHT awareness decrease. Bear in mind, that this is a minor + or -. You aren't going to look at a receiver and have the whole defense chase him so that you can quickly switch and catch a guy wide open. It will be a gradual difference as it should be.

As far as the CPU goes, elite QB's will rarely throw out of their cone of vision. Low AWR QB's will throw out of their cone more often. From what we saw at EA, the camera angle will not rotate with your cone of vision, just the cones itself.

My hope is that this will balance gameplay out a bit more. We should see more of a difference between high awareness and high speed QBs. Vick will be more deadly on his feet with the sprint button change, but his cone of vision won't be anything like Manning's vision will be. It will take some serious practice to get over the learning curve, and an even greater premium will have to be place on blocking and pass protection in order to succeed in the passing game. One the other end, I think we will be looking at a more interesting and realistic passing experience.

I've been a little dismayed at what they're doing to these games. They're quickly going to become so difficult that casual players like myself won't ever be any good, and that sucks. As it is, I may play 3-4 games a week, and at that rate will never be any good at using the vision cone. It just seems the game makers are targeting the people that play for hours upon hours...

You trust the companies that have enough money to put out quality Madden-challengers to even take the risk of publishing games without licenses? NFL2k kicked ass and they STILL had to drop the 2k line down to $20 to compete with Madden.

Personally, I don't really even care about the license as long as the gameplay rocks. In fact, what I'd love to see is a game which offers robust customization features (stuff way better than the mostly shitty logo and uniform options Madden offers on the console versions) of teams and leagues down to the very field size (NFL, CFL, or Arena), stadium type (Outdoor, Dome, Retractable, or Arena; again, a robust stadium editor would be key) and rules of play.

I'm talking being able to select the city a team's located in OR input your own information in about where a team is located, choose between 3 downs or 4 (or hell, why not 5?) to get a first down, and maybe even scoring values for good measure. Sure, it could come equipped with default "ready to play" leagues, but the ability to create a totally new league from the ground up would be beyond sweet. Then you select player ability, roster size... I could spend days just messing with a league before starting it (so saving in the middle of creation would be important, heh).

But it'll never happen, because the general public wants to play with the NFL players and the NFL teams in the NFL stadiums.

Rest in Peace, NFL2k. Rest in Peace, MVP Baseball. Great games cut down by that cruel monster called greed.

Guys, the NFL made a bad decision in making exclusive rights. EA had show little or no innovation recently. ESPN had all sorts of innovation that could only get better. Not to mention far superior graphics.

I don't think they've seriously upgraded Madden's graphics since.....well 2003.

Umm hmm

Jason "rabbit feet" Dunn.

He easily could have outrun the entire Broncos defensive line.

Throw a three yard pass to Dunn? Stevie look at receiver #1 (in the circle) the only person near him is an official.

It's coming.

Wrong, he is being covered just like Kennison.

Wrong, he is being covered just like Kennison.Where I don't see anyone close to him at all except that official about mid point and to the right of Dunn and whoever the Receiver with the circled number 1 (I now see the names and it says it is Morton).

You have poor vision then. There's a DB right over the top of Morton. And the one closest to Dunn is in a good spot to pick off any inside passes attempted.

Is there any chance that big circled Number 1 is completely hiding the DB from view cause gochiefs there is nobody there in my pictue, I just copied and pasted the picture and blew it up with my viewer.

No and that guy does not show up from your original thread picture on my screen. As I just asked maybe he was behind the circled one in my view, possibly due to the screen resolution (1024 x 768) on the 18 inch LCD screen i use. Not really sure. But let me just say i have really seen an improvement in you lately, so please don't revert to being an asshole and ruin it.

LOL don't sweat it. I thought you were goading me along the last few posts anyway.

Why do you only use 1024x768 on an 18 inch LCD?

Does it bother anyone else that Trent does not have a field of vision that covers the wide open receiver on the left side of the field?

Are you suggesting that Trent can't throw to that side of the field? You have to turn your QB's head, and the vision cone will move accordingly.

Besides which then I have to take the glasses off to walk around. It is bad enough that I have to use the glasses to read most paperback books.
