You would think you could get a pretty good shoe for less knowing that most are made in 3rd world nations where the workers 50 cents an hour.
But oddly enough, you can't. I bet it's an oligopoly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligopoly)

Wow, 39.95 is actually pretty cheap. What about the $120 ones?

Yeah, what a ripoff! I bet you could cobble your own running shoes for less than half that at home.

I will put it this way, generally I have found in this world that get what you pay for.

I will expand on this and say it's not just the world.

I am guessing here but I would say it is because you only shop at Payless.
Are you serious, it is easy to spend from 50 to 200 bucks on running shoes.

The last time I paid only 40 bucks for a pair of shoes, my mom was buying and I was like, 10.

That's why perfectly functional vid card I got for $80 on Ebay is being sold at Best Buy for $200.
Not to mention the 60 GB hard drive I scored for $30.

I thought it was a refurbished and out of the box. How much is a brand new one on Ebay? My guess it's closer to 140 than 80...

Rule #1: If you can't easily pull out the insole (i.e., it is sewn to the shoe) of your running shoes, it is a piece of crap. Do not buy it.
Rule #2: Pull out old insole and substitute spenco inserts.
Rule #3: Marry a woman whose sister-in-law works for City Sports so you can get all your sporting goods at cost.

Last time I paid $40 for a pair of running shoes my knees and ankles took enough punishment to make the $100 pair easily justifiable.

Indeed, you get what you pay for.
