Better question: Has he finally figured out that he's supposed to tackle the guy with the oblong brown leather thingy BEFORE he is 10 yards down the field?

yea, but usually he is reporting to camp fat and out of shape, but this year it looks as if he's only about 290 lbs.

In college he looked great because he had Julius Peppers next to him. He ought to REALLY blow the heck up now that he has Hicks next to..........wait, scratch that.

He usually has a turkey hidden under his shirt.

Is this pick from an afternoon practice? He's probably already eaten it.

I hope he wiped the turkey grease off of his hands before signing your stuff.

I'm pretty sure Ryan would be picking out a stuffed animal about this time.

The dude was a friggling goodyear blimp at the July practice. Huge. Baby Huey huge. We all saw it. How could he have lost so much weight in a month?

Mega Ultra Fat Ass Slim-fast.

That or Gun tied him up in his basement and wouldn't feed him for a few weeks.

He didn't. If you or I were in that same position, we'd look svelte as well. All his weight is on his toes and he's leaning backwards to make a cut. I'm pretty sure if he's standing there with his hands on his hips his gut is readily apparent.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the pick.

For once, Sims doesn't look like he's hiding a Christmas ham under his jersey.

A lot guys who take the weightroom seriously use phases during the offseason in order to build the MOST muscle possible. The fact that he comes into camp "out of shape" is probably due to something like this:

During the season, your muscles start wear out, so you want to start with as much muscle as you possibly can. This is done by BULKING:

About 16 weeks prior to the start of camp, you eat anything and everything you can get your hands on, and lift a crazy amount of weight. You put on a bunch of muscle, AND a bunch of fat. After about 10 weeks of BULKING, you continue to lift, but you start to restrict your diet. This period is called CUTTING.

You spend about 6 weeks CUTTING and getting your body ready for the high endurance demands of training camp. You won't lose all of that weight before camp, but the rest will come off by the time the season starts. This is only his third year and only his SECOND camp. I believe last year he started his cutting phase a week or two later than he should have. (Wasn't Ryan lifting with Ray Lewis down in Miami or somewhere last year?) He was probably following Ray's program, and I'm sure Ray has better genetics and cuts down a lot faster.

Obviously supplements and steroids enter the picture in a big time way as well, but I'll leave that alone...

Steroids. The average fan or athlete has no idea how powerful steroids are when it comes to manipulating body comp. Anybody worth their salt will definitely be on a cycle during camp cause that's the only way you can recover...and it's not uncommon to go up 15-20 lbs in bodyweight with a big loss of bodyfat to boot. Look at the concert pic of Jared Allen compared to now - doesn't even look like the same person. But anyway, backups are generally the only ones who get tested and white players tend to use at nearly a 100% clip.

i thought everyone forgot about Jared's drunken pooch photo. And it's also great to know that steroid use is racially profiled!!!

If that is what it takes to get to play up to his potential, at least this season, then I'm fine with that for now.
This is the season either he or Siavii need to step up.

To the 2nd part it's a lot more evened out now but back in the days of Boz, Mandarich etc. it used to be well known that very few of the black players used steroids simply because they didn't need to. Even Romanowski supposedly said it was the only way he could keep up with the blacks. He denied saying it but I wouldn't doubt if it's true.
