Chiefs reach deal with first-round pick Derrick Johnson

By ELIZABETH MERRILL The Kansas City Star

There will be no prolonged holdout for the Chiefs’ first-round pick this year.

Linebacker Derrick Johnson agreed to a five-year deal with the Chiefs on Sunday and is expected to be in camp today.

His agent, Vann McElroy, confirmed that the Johnson reached the agreement with the Chiefs. McElroy did not disclose financial details.

The Chiefs picked Johnson with the 15th overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.

Johnson, 6 feet 2 and 234 pounds, won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation’s top defensive player and the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker.

Johnson also was a finalist for the Bednarik Award (the nation’s top defensive player), the Lombardi Award (nation’s top lineman) and the Lott Trophy (defensive player of the year) as a senior at Texas last year. He was the only defensive player among the 10 finalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and was a unanimous first-team All-America selection. He also was a unanimous All-Big 12 pick.

Johnson’s nine interceptions last year was a school career record for linebackers.

As far as I know all those injuries are pretty minor. Bell's and Browning's sound especially trivial. We should try to keep this thread positive as opposed to filling it with downers. Mother ****ing Derrick Johnson just signed

Here is also another tidbit on how the Star learned the news. This is from the update on this afternoon's practice:

Sunday, July 31, 2005 Afternoon
K.C. Chiefs Training Camp Daily Updates

Extra Extra!

As Chiefs Coach Dick Vermeil was ending his press conference after practice this afternoon, President Carl Peterson came up to the coach and media and said, "Hold on coach, I've got an announcement...Derrick Johnson has signed!" A wide grin spread out on Vermeil's face and he shouted, "All right!!"

"We've agreed in principal to a five year contract," continued Peterson. "We just finished the negotiations by cell phone in the storage shed." The shed is located just 50 feet from the main field at the Ramer Field Sports Complex. "Let me say that throughout the negotiations, no tempers flared. We're pleased to have Derrick signed - now everyone is in - and that's great."

CHIEFS AGREE TO TERMS WITH FIRST-ROUND PICK LB DERRICK JOHNSON
Jul 31, 2005, 6:45:54 PM

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Sunday that the club has agreed to terms of a five-year contract with first-round draft pick (15th overall) LB Derrick Johnson. The Chiefs have now reached contract agreements with all nine of their 2005 draft selections. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available.

Johnson (6-3, 242) was a two-time All-America selection at Texas, where he appeared in 50 games (40 starts) over his four-year career. He racked up 458 tackles (281 solo), a school-record 65.0 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks and 10 INTs for 199 yards and touchdown. “We are happy to announce that we have reached an agreement in principle with Derrick Johnson, our number one pick,” Peterson said. “This would not have been done without Denny Thum, our Assistant General Manager. I just got off the phone with Derrick and he is very pleased, excited and anxious to get to camp. We will fly him in the first thing in the morning. We have agreed in principal on a five-year contract, no voidables. We are pleased to get this done.” The 2004 Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year also compiled five fumble recoveries, 11 forced fumbles, 39 QB pressures and 30 passes defensed.

As a senior in 2004, Johnson won both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the top collegiate defensive player and the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker. He opened all 12 games that season and finished the year with a career-high 130 tackles (73 solo) with 19.0 stops for loss (-52.0 yards) and 2.0 sacks (-15.0 yards) to go along with an NCAA single-season record nine forced fumbles. Johnson also recorded an INT, eight passes defensed and 10 QB pressures.

The Waco, Texas native was a Parade All-America selection and earned first-team All-Texas Class 5A honors his junior and senior seasons at Waco High School. Johnson posted 170 tackles (103 solo), 21.0 stops for loss, 6.0 sacks, five forced fumbles and two interceptions, including one for a TD as a senior.

Speaking of Rhonda Moss' big ugly ass, I wonder how she will spin this into "just what I reported last week, that a deal was about done and would be signed very soon".

Instead of what we all heard when she reported "according to her sources" that the two sides were far apart and we should be prepared for a long hold out.

Stupid Bitch, I love when her stupidity shines through. It is very evident that everything she says expect the opposite. Hopefully the fat bitch will start reporting the Chiefs have no chance to win the Super Bowl this year.

JOHNSON HEADED TO CAMP

Sides agree on $10.5 million, five-year deal

By ADAM TEICHER The Kansas City Star

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Linebacker Derrick Johnson spent the last few days at home in Austin, Texas, sleeping in, playing a healthy dose of video games, getting an update on his contract negotiations and working out at a local gym.

“I know my days are about to change,” Johnson said Sunday night. “My days of sleeping in are over.”

That’s because Johnson, the Chiefs’ first-round draft pick, agreed to terms of a five-year, $10.5 million contract. Johnson could make as much as $13.6 million if he reaches incentives that would boost his fifth-year salary. About $7.8 million of the contract is guaranteed.

Johnson was to arrive at training camp today, though the Chiefs indicated Johnson might not join practice until Tuesday.

Johnson was a star of the offseason practices at left-side linebacker. He was playing second-team behind Keyaron Fox but perhaps only because the Chiefs didn’t want to provide Johnson’s agent, Vann McElroy, ammunition for negotiations.

Judging by his rate of progress in the spring, Johnson should claim a starting spot long before the Chiefs’ Sept. 11 season-opener against the Jets at Arrowhead Stadium.

“I’ll be ready for that as soon as the coaches believe in me,” Johnson said. “I was anxious the whole time, ever since camp started. I knew my agent had a job to do and it’s all part of the business, but I’ve never been sitting out of football when everybody else was working.

“I know I’ll naturally be a little behind because I missed a few practices but I don’t have any worries about that. I don’t think it will take too long to catch up.”

Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson and assistant general manager Denny Thum spent part of Sunday holed up in an equipment shed on the north side of the stadium as the Chiefs practiced on the grass. They were negotiating via phone with McElroy and one of his associates.

This was nothing new for Peterson, who has finished past deals at a Perkins restaurant and other odd locales in River Falls.

With about 30 minutes left in the evening workout, McElroy told The Star, “It’s done.”

Coach Dick Vermeil finished the workout without knowing about the deal. As Vermeil fielded questions about Johnson’s holdout, Peterson walked behind Vermeil and announced that the agreement had been reached.

“All of the chickens are now in the henhouse,” Peterson said.

Vermeil slapped Peterson on the back and said: “Hey! Nice job, coach!”

When the Chiefs started camp Thursday without Johnson, it was an ominous sign. The last three times the Chiefs arrived in River Falls without their top draft pick, the player’s arrival was delayed considerably and the negotiations turned acrimonious.

This time, Johnson is only a few days late for camp and the talks never turned bitter.

“It was a very professional negotiation,” Peterson said.

“It may be surprising to some of you but no tempers flared. No profanity was exchanged. It was just a continual process of trying to get it done.”

McElroy was aware of the Chiefs’ negotiating history and hopeful it didn’t repeat.

“In the past, some of their guys have been three weeks late to training camp,” McElroy said. “It’s been a nightmare. But they handled the negotiations in a respectful way. It got a little testy at times but it never got nasty and the wrong things were never said. Both parties were above that.”

The parameters of a deal became easier to reach when players selected immediately before and after Johnson reached agreements in recent days with their respective teams. Johnson was the 15th pick of the first round.

Since the Chiefs started camp, the two players selected before Johnson, Jammal Brown of New Orleans and Thomas Davis of Carolina, and the one chosen behind him, Houston’s Travis Johnson, agreed to deals.

“With the other players coming in at No. 13, No. 14 and No. 16 … Derrick’s representatives felt very comfortable with where we were and what we were doing,” Peterson said.

McElroy said a call from Peterson on Saturday was even more crucial to the discussions, which to that point weren’t progressing with any great speed.

“That really kick-started this thing,” McElroy said. “We had a frank talk about what we were both trying to accomplish, and I think each side really understood the other. We wanted a fair contract and the Chiefs wanted Derrick in to training camp. He’s a great player and they understand how important he is to their team.”

When it was all over, Peterson had a short phone exchange with Johnson and told him to expect some ribbing from his teammates when he arrived in River Falls today.

“Well, you’re behind about seven practices,” Peterson told Johnson. “You’ve got some catching up to do.”

Hey NFL read my sig !!!!!!!!!! PBJ

I think it's time for you to get a sig with DJ in a Chiefs uniform.

I hate the longhorns. When the Razorbacks played Texas last year, I went to the game and I kept noticing somone who kept getting after Matt Jones...It was DJ. I kept thinking, "I wish the Chiefs had a LB like him". Cedric Benson was very impressive as well. The atmosphere at that Razorback game was electric. We lost at the end 22-20.

Here's the Longhorns defensive stats from that game. Here's what i'm talking about.

Thanks for reminding me....hey Rhonda and all of 610: STRIKE 5!

...waiting for the next pitch.

This has been one of the most fantabulous offseasons any team has ever had....

Fantastic job, Carl!....

P.S. Why aren't you like this every year?

Season ticket sales were way down.

As nice as this is to read, I won't believe a word of it until I see it on BenMaller.com.

Man I hope thats just a concidence. That he would have done this last year if he had to advertise season tickets sales. :( As much as I still think King Carl needs to go I would hope that hes not that callous.
