they are the 2-door version of the corsica, which was my first car. took a hell of a beating. cheap parts, easy to work on. sold it when it was close to 200k about 5 years ago, and its still drivin around town. go for it if the price is right. you can get em cheap if you look hard enough. i've bought one for $75 and one for $200 before, with a little damage.

I'd place the Baretta slightly above the Escorts and Cavaliers with a demonstrable expiration date, but it's still a 4-banger FWD, and faces big problems, more often than not, north of 125-150K miles.

yeah its a cheapo, but go for the v6

thats a lot cheaper than anything comparable on autotrader. if its in good mechanical condition it sounds like a good deal

Give the tranny a good thrashing.
Hit some bumps to check out the struts.
check the steering closely for pittman arm wear [slop].
Look for fluids, check for oil smell.
Listen for lifter clatter.

Sure-oz used to be pretty proud of his Beretta. In fact, I think his original username was Beretta or something.

Who is Sure-oz?

Well, when people sign up they choose a username. In fact, I've even seen a guy use the name "cowboy_big_rich" once.

When they select that name, that's what everybody on the board knows them by....

Sure-Oz is a regular here.

Yeah - he'll probably be here tonight. His last visit was 2:37 AM this morning.

I don't think he'd say anything but positive about his, though. He liked it very much.

Regarding my opinion of the vehicle.... It's $700. How much car can you get for $700 anyway? Any way you slice it, you're getting what you paid for. I know the kid worked hard and I can appreciate that. But, $700 gets you a $700 car. $700 cars aren't generally known for being well oiled, dependable machines.

I had a 92 beretta back in the day. I loved it, ran great, and had no problems. Of course when I had it it was all of 3 years old.

Thats true.

guess I should just step back and let him do it.

If something is wrong with it, guess it would be a lesson to learn?

A few of my friends had them back when I was in high school and had lots of problems with them. Though for the price, if its mechanically sound it may not be a bad choice. Just be careful that it wont need a lot of work.

I dunno. Your call. What are his other options? Is it gonna need anything obvious such as rubber anytime soon?

naw..

tires look almost new.

I think for 700 bucks if he drives it a year then trades up, I would be happy.

If it lasts longer great!

he has been lookin all summer,

made a deal with him that if the right auto came up before he could afford it we would work it out. Kid has 1000 and this came up. He talks about it non stop since yesterday. wants to get up at 7 am kid can't wake up without water in his face at 8 for school yet he is in bed with alarm set.

Guess I should have told him that the seller wouldn't be available till 9 and we are gonna have someone look at it first before he gives them the green

There is a lot more to buying a used car than the "badging" on it. I haven't read thru all the replies so I don't know what has been asked about it. Let somebody (you or somebody that knows about them) test drive it and also take it somewhere and get the parts checked out (front-end, engine etc. checked out) and go from there.
